Tashua Family Weekly Update
Mrs. Neumeyer, Principal
January 7, 2022
Dear Tashua Families,
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful, restful break. As we kick off 2022, it is a wonderful time to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for. Each and every day, I feel extremely fortunate to be working within a supportive school community, filled with talented students and staff members and committed parents who are actively involved.
As we move into the New Year, we will be working with your children to not only help them to set new goals, but to also help them to build their stamina and perseverance for completing assignments. In order for children to be successful in the 21st Century, they will need to develop work habits that will help them acquire the GRIT they will need in order to stay committed to seeing learning tasks to their full completion, while at the same time striving to reach their highest academic potential.
At times, we find students have finished their assignments, however more effort could have been put forth when completing the learning tasks. We need to help children develop a sense of pride in completing their work, rather than just working to complete assignments.
To teach children how to persevere, we need to help them to appreciate that success comes when we don’t give up and we put our ALL into what we are working to accomplish; when we work hard to meet a goal, most times we achieve it! We can model this by pointing out the goals we set for ourselves in order to help our children see how our commitment and hard work really do pay off for the greater good.
It is also important for children to understand that no one is perfect and that making errors is very much a part of learning. We need to feel confident in pointing out the mistakes that we make in order to help our children to see how to work through challenges or obstacles to make improvements.
To motivate your child to put forth his/her best effort, use positive comments such as:
· “I know you can do it if you keep trying.”
· “I am impressed with how hard you are working; you never give up!”
· “I love to see the effort you are putting forth; your hard work is sure to pay off!”
Further, help your child to identify successful people around them, pointing out not only their fine accomplishments, but also the hard work and discipline it took to make it possible.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns or good news to share, please feel free to email me at NeumeyeJ@trumbullps.org or contact me at school by calling 203-452-4433.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Neumeyer

Spotlight on Social Emotional Learning
This week in Social Emotional class lessons, students have learned about:
Kindergarten: Conflict Resolution
Students were provided with various social scenarios and had to identify whether or not the character was showing “thumbs up – good or thumbs down – bad” problem solving skills.
Examples:
*Your friend cuts you in line so you push them out of the way. – Thumbs Down
*You want to go on the swings at recess but they are all taken. You ask if you can have a turn when a friend is done. – Thumbs Up!
Grade 1: Continuing Monster, Mouse, & Me and Social Filter
*Due to shortened week and staff/student absences some classes are on different lessons
Grade 2: Tattling vs. Reporting
Students learned the difference between Tattling and Reporting in the school setting.
Reporting is appropriate when: someone is sick, hurt, or there is danger/unsafe.
Tattling is when everyone is okay, it was an accident, everyone is safe.
Examples:
*Your friend fell off the monkey bars and hurt their arm. – Reporting
*Someone calls you a mean name. – Tattling
Grades 3: Size of the Problem
Student learned about the different Sizes of Problems and applied it to various scenarios.
Small = I can solve it myself
Medium = Ask an adult for help
Big = 9-1-1
Grade 4: Continuing Social Problem Solving Skills
*Due to shortened week and staff/student absences some classes are on different lessons
Grade 5: Friendly vs Hurtful Teasing
Friendly Teasing:
-You are friends with the person
-Nobody gets upset
-Nobody is ganging up on a person
-It is done with good intentions and a friendly tone of voice
-Topics of teasing is not things that are out of a persons’ control
-Topics of teasing are not sensitive subjects that can hurt feelings
Hurtful Teasing:
-You don’t know or are not friends with the person
-Someone gets their feelings hurt
-One person is targeted by many
-Topics of teasing is about physical or mental ability or appearance
-Topics of teasing is about sensitive subjects: politics, religion, culture, race, grades
-Teasing is done to show off or make others laugh
-Teasing continues even when asked to stop

In addition the following letter was sent to families regarding COVID Vaccine Cards:
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As many of you are aware, COVID vaccines are now available for children ages 5 and older. As we continue to navigate through this pandemic, it is our goal to minimize student quarantines. If you can prove your child has been fully vaccinated and is asymptomatic, then we can eliminate the need to quarantine. Please note, a student is not considered fully vaccinated until they are two weeks past their 2nd dose.
To speed up our process of identifying close contacts who are fully vaccinated, we are providing you with the option to upload your child's vaccination card proactively. In no way are you required to upload your child's information. The only staff who will be able to see this information will be district level and building level administrators involved in the quarantining process and our nursing staff.
Please use the following link to upload your child's completed Vaccination Card: Tashua Vaccination Upload Form. You must be signed into your child's @trumbullps.net google account to complete this form and upload the card. If you receive an error message, "you need permission" it is because you are not signed in to your child's google account.
If you choose not to upload your child's vaccination card you will absolutely have the opportunity to share the vaccine card with the school nurse if your child is identified as a close contact. We will not be able to allow your child out of quarantine or until we receive an image of your child's vaccination card.
Thank you for considering this option.
