Check it out!

Did you know your child is learning about plant structures and their functions? In class they did an awesome experiment using celery to show how plant structures work to send water and nutrients throughout the plant. Ask your 4th grader about it!

Check out our wonderful scientists!

What's going on in the classroom?

Reading

We are still working in our traditional literature unit. This week students are working determining the meaning of unknown words in a text.

We will be learning the 5 types of clues that authors give us in texts. Those are synonyms, antonyms, the definition, an example, or at times the author doesn't give you the meaning of the word, and you must make an inference about what the word means.

If your students is struggling to determine the meaning of a word encourage him/her to read around the word and use clues in the text to determine the meaning!

Math

We have just wrapped up our place value unit. The students took their place value assessment yesterday. We are now moving into multiplication and division.

This would be a GREAT time to review multiplication facts with your child! As we move into division if a student hasn't mastered his/her facts division is going to become frustrating!

Ask your student about playing the Price is Right last week in math class, and making "ballpark" estimates! We had so much fun!

Science

We are truly BLOWN AWAY by the creativity and hard work your students showed in their first science project! Way to go!

In the classroom the students are wrapping up their work with plant structures and their functions and are moving on to animal structures and animal adaptations.

SHHHHH..... We are working on an upcoming field trip where we will get to see plant structures in real life! Stay tuned for more info!

Writing

We are working on our narrative unit still. This week we talked about writing a good lead for your story. We connected our writing to books that we read-- if you pick up a book and the beginning doesn't "hook" you then you don't want to read it. We worked hard in class to write leads that are interesting to our reader.

SHOUT OUT!!!!

Did you know that Mrs. Akin's class was chosen to be leaders at Project Fit America day? (Out of all the classes in the school!!) The students were the hosts and ushers for the event! They got to seat important guests, hand out the agendas for the event, and seat all the classes from the rest of the school!

WAY TO GO MRS. AKIN'S CLASS!!!! ALL OF 4TH GRADE IS SO PROUD OF YOU! YOU REPRESENTED 4TH GRADE WELL!
