*Allergy Season Is Upon Us*
I know we are in the season of sneezing and red itchy eyes. I wanted to give a few tips to help parents out in determining whether their child may be suffering from season allergies or pink eye. Allergic conjunctivitis is often confused with pink eye caused by viral infection of conjunctiva due to their similar symptoms (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2021). Always seek medical attention when waiting for proper diagnosis so that treatment can be initiated quickly.
The below is guidance presented by John Hopkins Medicine: Pink Eye VS Allergies and CDC Pink Eye
Similarities
• Eye redness
• Watery discharge from eyes
• Gritty feeling
Differences
• Intense itching- symptom associated with eye allergies.
• Pink eye often starts in one eye and spreads to other eyes. Allergies usually affect both eyes at once.
• Bacterial Conjunctivitis: More commonly associated with discharge (pus), which can lead to eyelids sticking together (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021).
Please keep in mind that following a diagnosis of pink eye, a child may return to school 24 hours after the first dose of prescribed medication has been administered.
