The First Grade Flyer

Updating you about our fabulous first grade class!

Looking Back

This week, First Graders participated in a science activity where we asked the question, "Natural or Human-made?" We talked about how natural things can be found in nature and are not modified (or changed) by people. Human-made things can start as natural things, but are then changed or have things added. For example, concrete is human made because it can't be found in nature, but it is made of natural things like sand, rock, and other natural elements. Everyone got to bring in an object, and the class determined whether it was natural or human-made. Check out some of the examples below!

Grown-ups: check out this blog post about helping your First Grader identify objects

This week, First Grade took a spelling test. This week's theme was "words with OO sounds." Our spelling skills are moo-ving right along!

If you look below, you can see next week's spelling list.

Grown-ups: please start practicing the words with your first graders!

Looking Ahead - Learning

1. Reading and Language Arts:

This week, we will be reading If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, by Laura Joffe Numeroff.

You can listen and read-along with this story by watching the video below.

After we read the story, First Graders will answer a series of questions about the characters, the story, and about different events that happened. Then, (my favorite part!) students will write their own story! Start thinking now about what animal you might like to write about, and what you are going to give it. We will be working on these books this week and next week. My example book is, "If You Give a Tiger a Toothbrush."

2. Math

In math, we will be furthering the things we learned last week about single digit addition by combining single and double digit addition. (Example: 13 + 8). We will then move on to double digit addition! (Example: 24 + 52)

Have your first grader SHOW what they know so far by taking the quiz below.

3. Around the World

As you may know, this month we are focusing on the country of Burkina Faso. This week, we will be talking about what families in Burkina Faso look like. We will also be Skyping with MY first grade teacher, Mrs. Clouser, who has lived in Burkina Faso for many years. First Graders will be coming up with questions to ask Mrs. Clouser during our Skype session.

To learn more about this country, click "Burkina Faso" below.
