STAAR IS COMING! AVOID SUMMER SCHOOL!
Parents,
Our students took their Cycle 2 District Assessments this past week and made tremendous progress. Please ask your scholar what his or her scores were for the reading and the math tests. 5th grade also took Science! Talk with him or her about goals! Scholars want to hear how proud you are! Every scholar should be growing at least 10-15 points or more each exam!
Burchett is back on track! Make sure you continue to encourage your scholar to do his or her best on weekly assessments, classwork, and assist him or her with completing homework. Reach out to the teacher to see how you can help your scholar reach the next level! Remember, learning never stops! The more they learn the more opportunities they have in life!
Social-Emotional Learning At-Home...From Our Counselor, Mrs. Allen
Hello families!
This week we will discuss: Teaching Kids to Practice Mindfulness
Teaching kids about mindfulness does not have to be complex. Once your child learns how to practice mindfulness, they will have, what experts call, a growth mindset. In a growth mindset, people believe that their abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work.
These simple mindfulness exercises will help your kid feel grounded and prepare to grow emotionally, physically, and mentally.
1) Be Physically Mindful
Being physically mindful refers to observing what is going on around you and how your body feels. There are simple deep breathing techniques and observation activities that help children become aware of what is going on around them. For example, we can instruct our child to be like a ‘lion’. Tell them to sit up straight, gather inner strength, and take deep breaths in and out as they imagine tracing a lion's mane. Another simple mindful breathing exercise is to blow bubbles or practice pinwheel breathing (slowly blow on a pinwheel). Another good option for children of all ages is to try body scan meditation. To practice this guided meditation, follow these simple tips:
- Sit for a couple of minutes in a quiet place
- Start by taking slow deep breaths
- Ask them to focus on how their body feels, how do your feet feel? How does your legs feel? (and work up the body)
- Notice how the air feels moving in and our of your lungs
2) Be Emotionally Mindful
Gratitude and positive affirmations actually can wire your kids brain for happiness. Many studies have linked gratitude to improved physical health, better sleep, improved self-esteem, and overall happier adults.
In fact, neuroscientists have actually shown that the brain is rewired when gratitude is practiced. Learn 4 other ways to wire your kid’s brain for happiness here. A great activity to incorporate mindfulness and gratitude is the “Be a Lamb” exercise. Ask your child to be like a sweet and grateful lamb. These questions will help them recall times when someone did something nice for them. These simple activities will help wire your kid for emotionally intelligence.
3) Be Mentally Mindful
These calming activities and relaxation techniques will help your child find peace and mindful awareness. One example is to ask them to “Be a Frog”. To do this, instruct your kid to pretend they are a frog sitting on a lily pad. Ask them to sit quietly and calmly for as long as they feel comfortable. This technique helps a child learn how to relax, keep an open mind, and be comfortable doing absolutely nothing. Advise them to place their full attention on, well, nothing. This is a particularly useful tool for a child who wants to practice mindfulness.
Final Thoughts on Mindfulness Activities for Teens and Kids
The benefits of mindfulness activities include less stress, improved general health, and a boost of confidence. Teaching your child these skills at an early age can help them develop a calm state of mind and healthy mental habits. Even at a young age, trying a mindfulness activity is an effective way to teach kids to focus and live with intention. The best part about these mindful exercises is that they are fun – no matter if they are young kids, elementary school children, or even attending middle school or high school. Raise strong lions, calm lambs, and assertive bears when you teach them these lessons in mindful listening and living.
Take a mindful moment and try them yourself!
¡Hola familias!
- Comience tomando respiraciones lentas y profundas

Now - April 26 - Donations for Teacher Appreciation Week
Teacher Appreciation Week is quickly approaching and we are wanting to do something a little different this year. We would like to stock the lounge with all of snacks, fruit, pastries and drinks that they can grab and go throughout the week. Our goal is to stock things at the beginning of the week and restock as we have items available throughout the week. We want to stick with single serve items, so that we do not have to clean up and put away each day.
We are looking for volunteers to donate items that we can use. PTO will also shop for fresh fruit, yogurt, cheese and fresh items. Many bulk items can be found at Sams and Costco for decent prices. Local grocery stores also have great choices. We have even found that some can be ordered from Amazon.
We have put together an Amazon wishlist that can either be used to order from and ship to school or to give you an idea of the type items we are looking for. We have also created a sign-up genius to be used to sign up for specific items. Please take a look and consider donating to our wonderful teachers that have worked so hard this school year.
Please send/bring all items to the PTO office no later than April 26th. This will give us time to see what other items need to be purchased. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tiffany @ 979-575-0487 or Sarah @ 832-812-5609.

Spring ISD Parent/Guardians:
If your student is seeking to attend a school in 2022-23 for which they are not zoned, the window to submit a transfer application is set to open on April 4 at www.springisd.org/transfers.
