November - Giving Thanks

Hello Heath Brook families,

Thursday, November 3...Parent Teacher Conferences 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Look for a communication from your child's teacher soon. Remember that our unified arts specialist (art, music, physical education, STEAM, digital literacy) teachers, special education service providers, and reading specialists are also available for conferences. Please reach out.

Book Fair is coming! Monday through Wednesday, November 7-9.

American Education Week is November 14 - 18. Parents are invited Wednesday, November 16 to attend one of our assemblies. THESE TIMES ARE CORRECT...THE CALENDAR BELOW IS WRONG.

Preschool and kindergarten parents - 10:15

Parents of first and second-grade students - 9:15

No students will be performing. Students will practice being a respectful audience while we

- sing our national anthem

- pledge allegiance to the flag

- learn about the six branches of the military (in honor of Veterans Day)

- learn how to show respect as a good Heath Brook citizen

Reminder to Parents who drive their children to school...Please be mindful of the entrance and the fact that staff are still coming in while you are dropping off your children. Some parents have been blocking the entrance to the parking lot by pulling in side by side instead of a single file. This prevents staff that come in closer to the beginning of the school day from getting into the parking lot. Thank you.

From Mrs. Smallidge in the Library

We have had a great start of the year in Library! I’ve been enjoying working with your children so much.

We are currently finishing up our nonfiction unit. Students at all grade levels have been learning about the various features of a nonfiction book, from the table of contents to the index.

Kindergarten particularly enjoyed learning about pigs. We emphasized how even if you can’t read the words in a nonfiction book, you can still learn a lot by looking closely at photographs. They then drew what they had learned. You can see their beautiful, detailed drawings hanging in the library.

First grade’s favorite lesson was brainstorming body parts and then skimming a nonfiction book about bodies to learn more about them. They could have kept skimming and learning for hours!

Second grade worked hard on listening for information and taking notes. We read a book about tarantulas and scorpions, which they found fascinating, and then created a Venn diagram comparing the two.

I will be at the Dewing School for parent-teacher conferences. Please feel free to drop by the cafeteria, where the library is currently housed, and say hello. I am also available during my extra help hours, which are Wednesdays from 8:15 - 8:45 and Thursdays from 8:00 - 8:30, alternating weekly between Dewing and Heath Brook. You can also reach out to me at msmallidge@tewksbury.k12.ma.us.

The World According to Mister Rogers - Important Things to Remember

The Courage to be Yourself

Some days, doing "the best we can" may still fall short of what we would like to be able to do, but life isn't perfect - on any front - and doing what we can with what we have is the most we should expect of ourselves or anyone else.
