Westview Staff Spotlight
Ashlee Hayden
1. What classes do you teach and/or programs and activities do you work with?
I teach all AGS 2 this year. I’m also the badminton club advisor.
2. How long have you been at WHS?
This is my 6th year at WHS
3. What do you enjoy most about the Westview community?
The students and staff! I taught my first 3 years at Stoller and appreciated the students/families so much that I was only willing to leave if I got to follow the Stoller families to HS. I love that the staff here feels like a team, and that we’re all willing to learn and grow together.
4. If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it - metaphorically speaking, getting a message out to millions or billions - what would it say and why? It could be a few words or a paragraph. It could be someone else's quote or any quotes you think of often or live your life by. Why would you put it on a billboard today?
If you’re going to take the time to do something, take the time to do it right.
5. What is something about you that many people at Westview might not know? (Hobbies, talents, interests, fun facts, etc...)
I have a huge collection of board games and video games. I also love cooking and baking. Pre-pandemic I would host board game dinner parties with friends and family, and I am looking forward to when it’ll be safe enough to do so again.

1. What classes do you teach and/or programs and activities do you work with?
I teach Intermediate English Language Development, Advanced English Language Development, Social Studies II, and Global Conflict & Cooperation/Modern Globalization that is connected to a section of Advanced ELD.
2. How long have you been at WHS?
This is my 18th year at Westview.
3. What do you enjoy most about the Westview community?
I enjoy the students that I have the privilege to work with. As an English language development teacher, I get to work with people from literally all over the globe, representing different languages, cultures, and experiences. They truly make Westview a special school and I feel very lucky to learn from them year after year.
Since I grew up in Vermont, where billboards have been illegal since 1968, and lived and taught in Utah for five years, I must go with a quote from Edward Abbey’s classic novel The Monkey Wrench Gang.
“Dr. Sarvis with his bald mottled dome and savage visage, grim and noble as Sibelius, was out night-riding on a routine neighborhood beautification project, burning billboards along the highway—U.S. 66.”
Edward Abbey, The Monkey Wrench Gang
5. What is something about you that many people at Westview might not know? (Hobbies, talents, interests, fun facts, etc...)
Rock n' roll will never die...not even with a pandemic! I play bass for the Death Ridge Boys and we are recording a new record this March, and I am looking forward to playing our first show since the plague struck on May 10th at Blackwater with The Chisel (UK) and Long Knife.

DECA
Science Bowl Winners!
Matthew Westley, Ivan Philip, Zachary Zhang, Karthik Krishnamurthy, and Ethan Zhang got 1st place at the Bonneville Power Administration's regional science bowl tournament yesterday (it was held online). This will be the 8th time we've won in the last 9 years. This qualifies our team for the national tournament. Depending on COVID restrictions, we may actually get to go to Washington DC for this competition, all expenses paid for by the Department of Energy. Otherwise, it will end up being online like last year, where we placed 5th. I'm extremely proud of these kids, as I have worked with three of them since freshman year and they have stepped up in leadership and skill.

Reminders
Did You Know? (Reminder)
ACT Day - April 5
We will be holding our ACT day on April 5. 11th grade will be taking the ACT and 10th will be takin the Pre-ACT. The plan for our 9th graders is still to be determined. There is no school for seniors on this day. We encourage seniors to work on college apps, senior projects, job shadow, or participate in other college and career prep opportunities on this day. It will be a special early release day, ending at 1pm.
Indoor Mask (Reminder)
We have had some extended breaks lately and want to make sure all of our students remember masks are required at all times unless you are eating in the cafeteria or a designated lunch space. It is important we all do our part to keep everyone safe. Wearing a mask includes covering your nose as well. We are asking all food be consumed in designated eating spaces and not in the hallways while traveling between classes. The more we can ensure we are masked around each other, the better chance we have to maintain a desired level of safety. We appreciate our students following this and our parents and guardians reminding them from home.

Beaverton School District Antiracist Vision Statement
The BSD School Board unanimously voted to adopt an Antiracist Vision Statement. Informed by the work of the Beaverton Multicultural Educator Community (BMEC) and the 40-member Equitable Policies Task Force made up of students, family, community members and staff, the vision statement will guide our implementation of our Every Student Belongs Policy (ACB) and help ensure that our schools are safe and welcoming learning spaces for all.
Antiracist Vision Statement
Every student and employee has the right to learn and work in a safe and inclusive school environment that honors their race, color, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability and national origin.
Beaverton School District owns that our student outcomes currently point to our part in perpetuating institutional racism, and we commit to actions that address the current culture that is leading to these outcomes. Schools are critical in providing safe and creative opportunities for people to learn about different cultural and racial identities, have conversations about pressing issues and correct injustice wherever it exists. We commit to eliminating the structures, policies and practices that perpetuate inequities in our schools and in our community.
Beaverton School District will authentically engage each student, family and staff member to build connection, uplift understanding and truly value the diversity of our school communities. We will work to dismantle policies and systems that perpetuate institutional racism and barriers to education and other school-related activities. Students and families of color will see themselves represented in curriculum, materials, instruction, classrooms and all school activities in our district. Our district will honor, respect, represent, engage with and be accessible to students and adults from all communities.
Eliminating racism and all forms of bias is fundamental to our work — not just a part of our work. We commit to removing racism, white supremacy, hate speech and all forms of bigotry from our schools and communities.
Our district will:
- Seek and incorporate student, family, educator and administrator input in decision-making processes.
- Provide ongoing anti-bias and antiracist education to every staff member.
- Enforce Every Student Belongs procedures to prevent, interrupt and stop racist and biased incidents among students and between staff and students or community members.
- Create an inclusive learning community that honors, respects, represents, engages and is accessible to learners from all communities.
- Create permanent district funding and resources to promote equitable policies, structures and practices for BIPOC students and other marginalized groups.
- Implement policies, procedures and professional development to confront and eliminate conscious and unconscious racism and review these policies and procedures regularly to ensure we are meeting our commitments.
