DECEMBER 20TH-21ST

First of all, a huge SHOUT OUT to our PTO for providing the staff the most wonderful pastries, soups, and desserts. THEY WERE AMAZING and the staff truly appreciates it! Thank you to Julie Thomsen, Courtney Sanford, and Leslie Smith for organizing, preparing, and cleaning. We feel so spoiled!

Last week was full of activities for all grades. We continue to be grateful that we get to participate and attend many annual traditions this year. Our students and families did an outstanding job of bringing in food items that will go to the Salvation Army. While I don't know the total weight, we do know that they brought in over 1500 food items. That's amazing! I'm so proud of our students and of you all for helping instill the gift of giving to others. I try to reiterate to our students that it makes us feel good to make others happy. Also a big thank you to Mrs. Gillaspy and her Fuel Up to Play team for coordinating the efforts along with Mrs. Fruhling and her son for loading all of the boxes and delivering them. Thank you all!

This week is a short week but it will be full of activities as well. On Monday afternoon, we will have our Holiday Stations from 1:35-3:00 pm. The students will be with their reading buddy classes moving through three stations--Bingo, learning a Holiday jig for the assembly, and decorating an ornament. On Tuesday morning we will have our 2nd Quarter Assembly Sing-a-Long. We will celebrate our Quarterly Cool Cats and each class will sing a special holiday song. We will also have our last dress up day, "Mele Kalikimaka" to us all. That's "Merry Christmas" in Hawaiian language. Dream of a beachy vacation and dress Hawaiian or tropical. School will dismiss two hours early on Tuesday. Kindergarten and 1st Grade will dismiss at 1:15, 2nd and 3rd Grade will dismiss at 1:20, and 4th and 5th Grade will dismiss at 1:25. Please make sure you have made pick up plans if they have changed.

One last friendly reminder, when dropping off or picking up your child, if you need to get out of your vehicle to assist your child or bring them in, please park in the parking spaces and not in the drive through lane. We've had some close calls and would like to keep all students and families safe as well as keeping the traffic flow moving. Thank you!

From our Kenwood Family to yours, have a great holiday season! We will see you on Wednesday, January 5th.

2 HOUR EARLY DISMISSAL THIS TUESDAY

Please make sure to make arrangements for our early dismissal this Tuesday.

  • 1:15 dismissal for Kdg & 1st grade
  • 1:20 dismissal for 2nd & 3rd grade
  • 1:25 dismissal for 4th & 5th grade

Dress Up Day-Tuesday, December 21st

COUGAR OF THE WEEK SIBLINGS--Harlow and Sparrow

Big picture

DECEMBER 13TH-17TH

This is the last full week that somewhat completes our fast and furious month. We will finish up winter testing mostly in math and catching up students who were absent or need retesting. We love to see how our students' grow from Fall to Winter to Spring and to gauge where our strengths in instruction lie and what areas we need to focus on. Please help us encourage our students to give us their best so we can celebrate their growth and focus intentionally on their needs.

The fifth graders at Kenwood were selected to take the NSCAS Math assessment pilot. This will help the state gauge the testing protocols and work out any "kinks" prior to the roll out of NSCAS growth assessments next year. The students will take this on Wednesday.

Also this week the kindergarteners will be making Gingerbread Houses with their parents and/or special guests on Friday morning. This event begins at 8:45 AM and we are super elated that we get to hold this event this year since we missed out last year. Also on Friday morning, we will be holding the Pig Races. Students who sold twenty or more items on the PTO fundraiser will get to select a mechanical pig and race it against others. The winner will receive $100. The students look forward to this every year.

Next week on Monday we will hold our annual "Holiday Stations". The students will play bingo, learn a holiday 'jig', and decorate an ornament. On Tuesday of next week, we will hold our 2nd quarter assembly along with a Sing-a-Long. Students will be dismissed two hours early on Tuesday, December 21st.

Friday is one of our DRESS UP DAYS--On the 3rd day before Winter Break, my principal said to me, "Walking in the Winter Wonderland" makes me chilly. Wear your favorite winter pajamas! We will also have Superhero Reading Buddy day and will read in front of a fireplace with our buddies from another grade level.

Please see below for a link to help out with the PTO Holiday Teacher Appreciation set for this week.

Have a great week!

FEED YOUR COMMUNITY FOOD DRIVE

Our Fuel Up to Play 60 Committee held our annual FEED YOUR COMMUNITY food drive last week, December 6th-10th at Kenwood Elementary. Food donated helped supply the Salvation Army with their holiday dinner boxes and other foods that didn't fit their criteria went to the food pantry at the Kearney Jubilee Center. Last year we donated over 3000lbs of food! Totals for this past week was 1,459 items! I'm so proud of our Kenwood Cougars and can't wait to hear if we broke the 3000 lb mark! Congratulations to Mr. Howard's 5th grade class for being the top class bringing in the most items. They were 69 items above second place, Mrs. Chamberlain's 3rd grade class and 71 items ahead of Mr. Anderson's 4th grade class. Mr. Howard's class will get an extra PE day and Mrs. Thompson's 1st grade class won the other raffle drawing for an extra PE class as well. A HUGE SHOUT OUT to Mrs. Gillaspy and the Fuel Up to Play committee for organizing this event! BUT BEST OF ALL IS HOW THIS INSTILLS THE GENEROSITY OF GIVING TO OTHERS!

Second Step Weekly Focus: Managing Learning Challenges

Using our Calming-Down Steps helps us be better learners! There are many opportunities to practice your calming-down skills at school. You may have a strong feeling when you have to wait, or when you make a mistake, or when you have trouble finishing a difficult task. These are perfect moments to practice using your stop signal, naming your feeling, and calming down. When staff and students at our school calm down our emotions, it helps us all learn.

December 6th-10th

I want to start this week by thanking Mr. Consbruck for the three amazing and entertaining music programs this past week. His attention to detail such as transitions, speakers, location on stage, hand movements, and facial gestures are truly what makes these programs a success. He's put in a lot of hard work for these three programs and the students performed their very best. Thank you to Mr. C and to all of the students that performed (grades 1 through 5). You all rocked it! *See pictures below.

This week Hope Gillaspy, our PE teacher, is organizing a "Feed Your Community" food drive along with her Fuel Up to Play 60 group members. Food donated will go to help supply the Salvation Army with their holiday dinner boxes and other foods that don't fit their criteria will go to the food pantry at the Kearney Jubilee Center. Last year we donated over 3000lbs of food! We would like to do the same this year! Students could also win the incentive to have extra PE time in the following week if their class name is drawn from a lottery. Each class will get 1 entry into the lottery for every 10 items they bring! Students just need to bring items into their own classrooms to be counted. We all look forward to witnessing the generosity of our students and families again this year!

This week we will continue with winter testing using FastBridge and MAP testing. On Tuesday and Wednesday, students in grades 1 through 5 will take their MAP reading test. Our fourth and fifth graders will also take their MAP math test on Wednesday. Please encourage your child to do their very best, get a good night's rest, healthy breakfast, and send them off with a cheer! These tests will continue into next week along with the fifth graders who will be taking the NSCAS (Nebraska Student-Centered Assessment System) math pilot test for the state testing protocol.

There will be no school this Friday, December 10th due to professional development.

Have a great week everybody!

Calming Down

When you have a strong feeling, it’s hard for your brain to think. After you use your stop signal and name your feeling, you’re ready to calm down! You can calm down by doing some slow deep belly breathing, counting, or using positive self-talk. Think for a moment about your favorite Way to Calm Down. Remember to use it this week if you need to. Calming down helps you think clearly!

November 29th-December 3rd

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving break as much as I did. I hosted Thanksgiving dinner as we usually do for the annual tradition which makes for a super bustling couple of days of cleaning, shopping, cooking, organizing, and cleaning again. It's always wonderful to see my family together and enjoying each other's company. My favorite part is being together with my two sons who are now grown and beginning their own lives separate from ours. What warms my heart is that they equally love coming home and spending time with us even though it may be that their laundry gets cleaned and folded! I'll take it!

This month will be fast and furious starting with this week. Our students will continue to rehearse for their music program this week and will travel to the Merryman to rehearse on stage for their final performance on Tuesday (for grades 2-5) and Thursday (1st grade). Please see the information below for more detailed information on dates, times, attire, and more.

Also beginning this week is our winter testing season. We love to see how our students' grow from Fall to Winter to Spring and to gauge where our strengths in instruction lie and what areas we need to focus on. Please help us encourage our students to give us their best so we can celebrate their growth and focus intentionally on their needs.

Our fourth graders will be going on a field trip to Hastings this upcoming Friday. It's an all-day trip that they really look forward to.

That's it for this week. We continue to be grateful to have the opportunity to have these experiences in person with our students.

Second Step Focus: Stop and Name Feelings

It’s okay to have strong feelings. But when you have strong feelings, it can be hard to think about what to do. You can get back in control by calming down. The first step is to use a stop signal to catch your own attention and to tell yourself to stop. You might say “Chill out!” “Stop!” or “Relax!” Next use your feeling detective skills to name your feeling. When you recognize your feelings, the thinking part of your brain can start to manage them. Take a moment to decide what stop signal you will use this week.
