Spotlight on Literacy
Mt. Healthy City Schools will empower students to read & write universally, think critically, and communicate effectively.
Reading and Writing Universally
In order to preview vocabulary that they would encounter throughout their unit over the Constitution, Mr. Jones and Ms. Wilson's 8th grade Social Students students created Frayer Models. As the example below shows, students were asked to write a definition from their notes, create a definition in their own words, locate a visual representation, and use each of their vocabulary words in a sentence. By having students work with words in this way, Mr. Jones and Ms. Wilson have provided them with the opportunity to enhance their understanding of each word, thus supplying their students with the tools necessary to better comprehend their unit of study.
Communicating Effectively
Mr. Ehling's 7th grade math students practiced their communication skills while working on a stations activity to solving step two inequalities. Within this group of young ladies, each took on the role of either facilitator, time keeper, or speaker. After discussing the steps to take in order to solve each inequality, they all took on the job of recorder and made sure to get all of their thoughts down on paper.
Thinking Critically
By clicking on the link below, you will be able to hear one of Mr. Yordy's 7th grade students, Kayah Israel, using her critical thinking skills to help her classmate identify where her error was made when solving her two step inequality. Since her classmate showed all of her work, Kayah was able to analyze her thought process, locate the misunderstanding, and explain how to rework the problem correctly. Thanks to the growth mindset instilled in her classmate, she was open to the feedback and welcomed the help from Kayah.
