Sorrick Family Focus
Week of December 10, 2018
Weekly Update
This week, students in Kindergarten and 1st Grade will be working hard to show how much progress they have made this quarter. In addition to the NWEA MAP assessment, our students will also be completing their 2nd quarter assessments in English Language Arts and Math. Next week, we will have a dance party during the school day to celebrate their successes and reward them for putting forth their best efforts! Each child will receive a MAP goal card with their Fall MAP scores and positive behavior expectations for testing. As they test, their teacher will place a stamp or a sticker on their card if they try their best, take their time or achieve a higher score than they earned in the Fall. All students who try their best and pace themselves on these tests will be invited to join the party. We are so proud of our Sorrick cougars and appreciate all you do to help and support your child at home!
If you haven't already heard, students at Sorrick School are working very hard in math to gain fluency with their facts. Our classes have been participating in a school-wide math challenge using an online program called Reflex Math. Students have their own usernames and passwords to practice their facts at school and at home. Each week, students who achieve fluency milestones are congratulated during morning announcements, receive certificates and earn special pencils. Classes are also competing against each other to earn special classroom rewards like a hot cocoa party! This incentive program is a fun way for your child to attain fact fluency. If you allow your child to use a computer or tablet at home, please encourage him or her to use Reflex Math and master those facts!
Have a great week!

You are welcome to shop with your child during their assigned time if you would like. Gifts range in price from $1 up to $10, with many options $5 or less. 5Essentials Survey for Parents
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey for parents will be available until February 15, 2019. This survey is to be completed by parents, guardians, or other caregivers with a child in grades pre-kindergarten through 12. The parent survey is available in both English and Spanish, and only takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin.
If you have more than one child and they attend the same school, you may elect to participate multiple times. For parents with children enrolled in multiple schools, we recommend that they participate in the survey for each school. Only one parent per household may participate in the survey.
For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or to view previous years’ Reports, please visit https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact 5Essentials Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or 5essentials@uchicago.edu.
