Vose Owl Notes
Family & Community Newsletter - February 2022
Vose Families,
As we are bracing for a few more record-low temperature days, as some of us even dealt with snowy cars this week! It's hard to believe just a few weeks ago it was so warm that some of my garden bulbs started to peek out early! But as with all things, the weather can surprise us and change unexpectedly.
We have some changes at Vose coming up and since we don't want anything to feel unexpected for you and your family, please be sure to take some time to read through our newsletter.
* Vose Addition: Due to increased enrollment and thanks to the 2014 construction bond, our building will have 4 new classrooms added by next fall for the 2022-23 school year. More details can be found below. The most impact will come from increased noise, decreased access to the school playground (limited access in the spring, and then, unfortunately, the playground will be closed all summer) and a decrease in parking spaces for parents in front and staff in the back parking lots. Construction will be starting around spring break.
* State Testing is Back: Later this spring students in grades 3rd-5th will have the opportunity to complete their state standardized tests. More info below.
* BSD is Seeking Bond input: Please see below for ways to provide input on our upcoming BSD Bond measure. This potential bond will be up for consideration in the May voting ballot.
To gain more information about the bond, visit the BSD Bond Website. Also, a quick request for parents & guardians...please make all efforts to plan for arrangements for how children will be getting home BEFORE they come to school each day. And if you have an update or change, please call the office and let us pass the info onto your child rather than requesting to call them out of class or calling them directly on a cell phone. It would be so appreciated by teachers and other students to minimize disruptions and confusion.
Earlier this week I was in the building in the evening when only myself and our night custodians were around. I sat and listened to the silence. The silence brought to mind the laughter I hear on a daily basis, the morning hello's that come my way, the chatter amongst students and staff about what is happening over the weekend. The silence of our building allowed me to step back, reflect and smile. I love this place, I marvel at the dedication of our staff, I honor our students, and I celebrate their growth this past semester. We have traversed this past semester with grace, frustration, hard work, thoughtfulness, reflection, and celebration. At the end of the day, it is this journey that gives us hope for what comes next. Let us all tackle what lies ahead with gusto and hope, a vision of community, and a feeling of pride and appreciation for each other.
All good things,
Monique Singleton, Principal (on the right, in photo taken before the pandemic!)
Melissa Holz, Assistant Principal (on the left)

Staff Appreciation Week Info from PTO- February 28 - March 4
PTO Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week
Hello Vose Families,
February 28 - March 4th we will be celebrating Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week.
We have planned a week-long event for the teachers and staff, but we need your help
-This Friday, February 25 we will be sending home a piece of paper and some construction paper so you and your student can make a Thank You card or note for your teacher or a staff member. It is not mandatory, but it is always a nice gesture. Our teachers and staff love and appreciate cards and notes from their students and their families. Let’s show them our appreciation and our thanks to them by making them beautiful cards or notes.
Once the card or note is done, your student can give it to his/her teacher anytime next week or turn it in to the office. Please check your student's backpack.
-On Wednesday, March 2nd, we are hosting a school-wide Potluck for our teachers and staff. Let's show our teachers and staff our appreciation by bringing them packaged snacks, food, drinks, cookies, cupcakes and muffins to the school. You bring any item(s) during morning drop-off on Wednesday and place it/them on a cart that will be outside the main door.
- We are also in need of $10 gift cards from local establishments (Target, Fred Meyer, Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Panda Express, Chipotle, Trader Joe's etc) for our Surprise Bag gift day. Please drop off at main by Monday, Feb 7th. Just let the ladies know to put it/them in the PTO mailbox.
- Also, 2-3 volunteers are needed for Smoothie Day on Thursday, March 3rd from 8am - 10:30am. Please email voseelementarypto@gmail.com to sign-up.
Thank you for your support,
Vose PTO
COVID-19 Consent Form
As the district prepares to provide additional COVID-19 testing opportunities to students to avoid quarantine or to shorten quarantine after Winter Break, it is important that schools have consent to allow the student to participate in a COVID-19 diagnostic test at school if it is determined through contact tracing they have been exposed to a positive case at school. Parents- please complete the COVID-19 consent form and submit it to the school if you haven't already. A copy, including translated consent forms can be found here under the COVID-19 Testing section.
Where can my student get a COVID-19 vaccine?
Tuesday, March 1st at Greenway, 4pm-7pm…sign-ups: https://greenway.beaverton.k12.or.us/
Friday, March 4th at Vose Elementary, 5-7pm
OHSU COVID-19 Student Screening Testing Program
We need to once again emphasize the importance of correctly labeling specimens. Labels must contain both the student’s full name and date of birth in order to be processed by OHSU lab.
Any handwritten specimens with no date of birth provided tests will be canceled and discarded due to not including these two unique identifiers.
Printed labels should be used whenever possible. All parents/guardians should have received barcoded labels from OHSU. If/when handwritten labels do need to be used, please review the attached instructions again, and note the following.
- Names should be written in the format of ‘Last Name, First Name’ (with no abbreviations or initials)
- Dates of birth should be written in the format of ‘mm/dd/yyyy’
- Providing the school name is helpful, but not required
Check with the office if you need the new labels with barcodes.
Thank you for your help with this matter, and for everything else you’re doing to make this program a success. We’ve seen a 30% increase in testing since December, and that wouldn’t be possible without your ongoing cooperation.
Best,
The K-12 COVID Screening Program team at OHSU

Character Traits of the Month
FEBRUARY's Character Trait is KINDNESS. We are supporting each other to show kindness. We have been celebrating Black History Month & the Lunar New Year in February.
MARCH's Character Trait is COURAGE- We will be reading about and defining Courage with our students while celebrating Women's History Month.
At Vose, our teachers and staff integrate lessons and activities to emphasize, highlight and teach about each character trait and heritage month. We encourage families to also tell stories and share examples of these character traits and heritage months at home.

Statewide Assessment for 3rd, 4th & 5th Grades
30-Day Notice and Opt-Out Information for the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS):
In 2010, Oregon adopted enhanced K-12 standards in English Language Arts and Math to ensure all students move from grade to grade with the academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond high school. The state tests challenge students to think critically, going beyond multiple choice and asking them to explain their answers. These tests provide a snapshot of your student’s progress and help us identify schools that need additional supports to ensure more students meet the higher standards.
If you do NOT want your student to take the English Language Arts or Math assessment test, please complete the opt-out form here on this page. Please submit this form to your student’s school by February 4 (for students in Grades 3-8). This form is only valid for the 2021-22 school year.
The term “opt-out” refers to the legislatively created process that applies specifically to the ELA and Math state assessments. Parents may opt out of state Math and ELA testing by submitting the state-created opt-out form. For all other state assessments, OAR 581-021-0009: Exemptions allows parents to request that their student be exempted from testing based on disability or religion. Unlike the opt-out process for Math and ELA, parent requests for exemption for all other state tests must:
· Be submitted in writing (there is no standardized form)
· Include the reason for request (disability or religion)
· Propose an alternative learning activity for the student
- A school administrator reviews and approves the exemption request.

BSD Bond Information
In May 2022, voters will decide on a new proposed capital improvement bond. If passed, the bond would raise about $723 million to be used on projects across the district including seismic stability upgrades, improvement of air ventilation systems, replacement of aging roofs and additional classroom space to alleviate overcrowding. Bond money also would be used to improve accessibility in special education classrooms, enhance learning spaces and replace all one-to-one student Chromebooks and iPads. The two largest proposed projects are the complete rebuilds of Beaverton High School and Raleigh Hills K-8 School.
The bond proposal will appear on the May 17, 2022 ballot.
