Preschool News from Ms. Freeman
The photos show the many exciting things that happened this week. Jack brought in Bun-Bun to share with our class. We went on a hiking adventure, exploring a new trail. We saw slugs, newts, and wild strawberries. We said good-bye to our tadpoles, which are now froglets. Soon they will be frogs. It was amazing to watch them hatch, grow, and change throughout the spring. We also participated in field day!
We wanted to thank Jack and his family for bringing in Bun-Bun and the Ashfield and Plainfield fire departments, Ms. Tyler, the PTO, and others who helped make field day super fun!
Preschool News from Ms. Melanie
We had a great time at Field Day! The day was lovely and the activities were such fun. We enjoyed making huge bubbles and chasing them to catch them–and only a few got away! The “Slip and Slide” was a popular spot–just enough of a hill and just enough refreshing water on the slide to make it wet and fast. We slid like otters on our tummies and got very wet! The Ashfield and Plainfield fire departments came with their trucks and set up three more activities for us–we loved them all! Happy laughter and good teamwork all around! We are grateful to all who made this day possible.
Kindergarten News from Ms. Sarah
During writing time this week, we made memory books about our year in school. We looked at photos from the year and the teachers wrote down student responses to questions like, "what was something funny," "what was something you were afraid to try but did anyways," and "what was your most important work this year?" Students glued pictures of their classmates in their memory books. Finally, we signed our names to complete this lovely keepsake from kindergarten.
First Grade News from Ms. Wyckoff
This past Friday first graders had a lovely visit to Porter Family Farm here in Ashfield. During our visit children met some chickens, collected farm fresh eggs, brushed a miniature horse named Peanut and a beautiful horse named Fanny, mingled with and fed the cutest and friendliest goats and saw a sweet three day old calf and her mama grazing! Children learned how to approach the animals in a calm way and how to care for all these incredible farm animals. We enjoyed a picnic lunch while observing a donkey named Jenny. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect weather day full of sunshine and a gentle breeze! A huge thank you to The Porter family and our helpful and kind Ashfield Police Chief Beth and Officer Fred. Thank you for helping us arrive at the farm and back to school safely. We appreciate all you do for us each and everyday!
Third Grade News from Ms. Carole
Third graders spent time this week preparing the gardens for their new caretakers. On Monday afternoon they handed up the gardens to the future third graders. The second graders had to find items in our garden area on a list with the help of a third grade partner. Now second grade families are signing up for a week of caring for the gardens over the summer months.
We also spent time making close observations of items we found in the Vernal Pool. The students enjoyed learning about and making drawings of eight different critters. They also got to use microscopes to see those things that live in the water that we can’t otherwise see.
Second Grade News from Ms. Robertson
This week we continued our habitat theme by reading the poem “Where Do I Live?”, which asked us to consider which of the following habitats would best be suited for a camel: the jungle, the tundra, the ocean, the forest, or the desert. We have also “visited” the Arctic tundra this week, reading aloud books such as Alaska’s 12 Days of Summer and Far North in the Arctic, which introduced us to animals that make their home on or near the tundra, such as the musk ox, the Arctic wolf, and the polar bear. Another animal that makes its home in the Far North is the moose, an animal that we are researching as a group. Our first step was to take two-column notes on the moose, focusing on areas such as what the moose looks like (color, weight, height, body covering), its diet, and dangers to the moose caused by human activities. Our next step will be to use these two column notes to write sentences for each section of our research report.
Fifth Grade News from Ms. Johnson
Students are finishing their research reports on various civil rights activists. They also created timelines of the lives of the people they are studying. On Friday, we will start our last social studies unit where we will study the history of Sanderson Academy. We also finished up the lessons we were doing from the last unit of our math program about multiplying and dividing by powers of ten. Our last math project will be a project where students create a dream bedroom to scale.
Sixth Grade News from Ms.Lilly
Last Friday we visited Morse Hill Outdoor Education Center. We participated in a few activities that focused on communication, team building, and listening. These activities were challenging, but the sixth graders rose to the occasion! Just a reminder that next week is jam packed with events. Please make sure to sign up to bring an item for our trip to the Ashfield Lake and remember you are welcome to join us!

Please remember to turn in all library books no later than June 17. Reminder slips will be sent home with students who still have books checked out. Thanks for your help!
News from Ms. Sue
Mindful Walks around the Sanderson Fitness Loop, is what has been & will continue to happen on these last few days of school! The weather has been beautiful, and sure does feel like summer is fast approaching. We have noticed lots of slugs, newts, butterflies and dragonflies. We even noticed a cool stonewall that had a walking path of rocks up and along the top of it…a very cool creation that someone took the time to build. When you do a mindful walk you will notice so many interesting things.
