Message from the Principal
Office hours are offered daily during the instructional school day. IHCS teachers are available during office hours to answer questions, provide clarification, discuss a student’s achievement progress, or attendance. It is a structured time where a teacher offers specific support based on a particular class or topic. Additionally, students are able to connect with their teacher, ask questions, get help on work that was assigned, and allows immediate support. At the same time, it forges strong relationships with students and parents.
First Grade Update
Our first-graders have been working hard and adjusting well to distance learning! Every morning, we log into our online meetings and are ready to learn!
We start off our day by getting to know each other better by answering our daily Morning Meeting question. This is also when we practice using complete sentences! We are also developing our social-emotional learning through Second Step. We discuss and practice important skills such as using our eyes, ears, and brain to focus and become better listeners. We also have learned how to be assertive with our learning and how to look for clues to identify how others are feeling!
During our ELA time, we have been learning about letter sounds (short a, e, i, o, and u sounds), blending sounds to read, and identifying important story elements, such as, the characters, setting, and key details in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. We have been practicing writing narratives about fun topics such as stories about our pets and our favorite fall activities.
During math, we have learned so much using number bonds and how we can use them to add and subtract! We’ve practiced with pictures, numbers, and even silly word problems. We’ve been using our whiteboards, notebooks, and even our fingers to show our thinking process!
Our creativity shines through during MAP! We love music, art, and P.E.! Overall, we have done an amazing job at adjusting to our distance learning routine, following daily expectations, and learning Google Meet/Zoom etiquette. We’ve learned so much in such a short period of time and our teachers are excited to see us keep learning and growing throughout the school year!

GOAL SETTING
Teachers and parents alike think about goal setting with students. From improving skills and getting assignments complete to being kind and putting things away, there’s always something to strive towards. Research shows that setting student goals improves both motivation and achievement. Goal setting encourages a growth mindset. It also supports the development of skills students need to prepare for their future careers.
Beyond that, setting short term goals can also break down a big job to seem more manageable. Right now with online learning many students are feeling overwhelmed, setting short-term goals with students can help them see that the work they need to complete might not be as hard as they think it is. Sitting down with students throughout the week or even at the end of the school day and setting goals of what they want to accomplish and when will help students feel less overwhelmed.
