The Lance
Week of January 24 thru 28
Thoughts and Ponderings
It's hard to believe we are halfway through the 2021-2022 school year! Thank you for your continued partnership as we strive to foster a safe learning environment for all of our students. We are looking forward to a fantastic second semester!
Other People Mindset
In our P2 classes next week, we will begin learning about the Other People Mindset (OPM) element of Supporting Others When They Struggle. Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical piece of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include: listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply just being there and sitting together in silence. Talking through a problem is a common way to help a person who is going through a tough time.
This week's video example is titled, "How You Treat People is Who You Are!" and highlights the difference one individual can make when he or she chooses to be positive force in the world. Please watch the video clip and then think about the following questions:
1. Who were you kind to today?
2. Who will you be kind to tomorrow?
“There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up."

Family Meeting Celebrations
Congratulations to the Class of 2027 who won The Golden Lance this week. This is the tenth week this year the seventh graders have been victorious. Great job, Class of 2027! Keep demonstrating our motto of: Take Care of Yourself, Take Care of Each Other, and Take Care of this Place by your thoughts and actions. We are so proud of you!
Congratulations to Jasmine Garrison who was recognized as a Lancer Leader of the Week! Jasmine is extremely spirited and she offers everyone her own unique view of the world. Jasmine has a giving heart and is always willing to include peers. She does excellent work in the classroom, asks questions, promotes critical dialogue, and is helpful and friend. Not only is Jasmine excelling in all of her classes, she also pushes herself to become a better artist each and every day. Way to go, Jasmine!
Congratulation to Toby Nguyen who was recognized as a Lancer Leader of the Week! Toby is extremely creative with intentional and well thought out artworks in many different art mediums. His unique point of view is at the heart of all his creations-- from painting to drawing and even fashion design! Toby takes the time to learn new techniques; persevering until he has mastered each skill at a high level. His perseverance is not only evident in the art room but also in the many relationships with peers. Great job, Toby!
I Heart Spanish: Enrichment Opportunity
Sixth graders who are interested in getting a jump start on Spanish should join the after-school program, I Heart Spanish, starting next Thursday, January 26, in Mrs. Plichta's room. Students will play games, learn Spanish, and try new regional snacks every week. Flyers are available in the office for more information on how to sign up.
Junior Achievement Finance Class
At the end of the unit, students will travel to “Finance Park”, a simulation set up by Junior Achievement at the Berrien County Fairgrounds. There they will assume "real-life" personas and develop a personal budget that includes expenditures for housing and food, savings, transportation, entertainment, health care, utilities, clothing, and education. Through a series of money management decisions, students put their classroom studies into action and face "adult" financial problems. This eye-opening experience gives students a solid foundation on which to build effective financial habits for life.
