Good Neighbors

While there are so many things that are fantastic about the design, aesthetic, and location of our wonderful school, being an almost one hundred year old building in the middle of a neighborhood does present some challenges. As you can imagine, schools like Oakland were designed to be walked to back in the day when every neighborhood had their own school. We now have about a third as many schools in Royal Oak as we did 50 years ago and the vast majority of students are driven to school on a campus and streets that were not designed for this.

As stated before, this does create some challenges, but it is nothing that we can't deal with as long as our community takes care to be safe for our kids and respectful of our neighbors. With this in mind, please be patient at pickup and drop off. We all understand how time can be an issue in our busy lives, but saving a minute or two at the expense of traffic safety is obviously not a trade off that we should ever consider. And given that we are located right in the middle of a residential area, we also want to be sure that we are good neighbors to all those that live around us. Please be sure to not be blocking driveways, honking horns, etc. during the aforementioned pick up and drop off times.

Everything we do is modeling for our young ones in some fashion. Thanks in advance to all for your attention to making sure we are both good neighbors and good examples for our kids.

MDYC (reminder)

Royal Oak Schools has long had a wonderful partnership with the Metro Detroit Youth Clubs. And as many of you know, that is particularly strong at Oakland, given our physical proximity to the club. Please see below for a new transportation program designed to make it easier to get out kids over there for after school programs.

Please note that you must be at least 6 years old to join the club and ride the bus.

One Last Informational Tidbit (reminder)

It is clearly an understatement to say that we have had a challenging last couple of years. A clear offshoot of this is that many of our kids and families are struggling with any number of things, be it social-emotional, financial, or any variety of issues that have been amplified by the pandemic. With this being said, please know that Oakland is a community that looks to support all of its members, both with school resources and our network of outside supports.

If you find your kids or yourselves in any sort of need, please feel free to reach out to me at Any request for assistance will be discreet, with full intent of following the wishes of each and everyone of you with regards to who might be made aware of your challenges.

In short, we care deeply and want to help.

Last, But Maybe Not Least...

During the first several months of the pandemic, I periodically wrote some thoughts that I thought important for some of us to think about. Many in our community have already read them, but I have had multiple people inquire about seeing some of them again, and we also have several new families joining us. With that in mind, I will keep the links below active (and may periodically add to them). Feel free to take a look or share or ignore, whatever your inclinations may be.
