Standard Language

Dialect
A regional variation of a language.
Language family
A collection of languages related to a common ancestral language that exists long before recorded history. English is part of the Indo-European language family.
Ideograms
Ideograms represent ideasor concepts, not specific pronuciations.
Ebonics
A combination of ebony and phonics. The African-American dialect that was preserved when they migrated north.
Isolated Language
A language unrelated to any language family.
Pidgin Language
A lingua franca that is in a simplified form. To communicate with speakers of another language, two groups construct a pidgin language by learning a few grammar rules and words of a lingua franca, with ther own language.
Extinct language
A language that is no longer spoken in daily activities by anyone. An example of an extinct language is the Gothic language
Spanglish
The diffusion of English into the Spanish language to create Spanglish.
