Principal Note
Erin’s Law
Dear Munhall School Families,
This letter is to inform you about Erin’s Law (Illinois Public Act 097-1147), an Illinois law passed in February, 2011 that requires public schools to provide child sexual abuse prevention education for all children in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grades. Named after sexual abuse survivor Erin Merryn, Erin’s Law will be implemented again this year in all District 303 Schools. Please note that Erin’s Law is not connected to The Keeping Youth Safe & Healthy Act (Senate Bill 818).
Between now and the end of the school year, several lessons will be facilitated by Mrs. Gina Rockwell, school social worker, and Mrs. Kati Smith, school psychologist, along with the classroom teacher utilizing the Second Step Child Protection Unit . This age-appropriate instruction will help students recognize unsafe situations, keep themselves safe, and learn how to respond to unsafe situations. Common themes across all grade levels include:
- Identifying safe touch versus unsafe or unwanted touch
- The Safety Rule About Touching (The Touching Rule): Private areas are not for others to touch, except to keep a child clean and healthy
- Steps to Stay Safe
- Understanding the difference between good and bad secret

Fire Prevention Week
Next week marks Fire Prevention Week! Although our STC Fire Department will not be able to conduct an in-person assembly, they have provided our students and families with tremendous resources to ensure fire safety at home. Attached to the eNews you will find a flyer produced by the STC Fire Department regarding how to make a home escape plan. Embedded within the flyer, you’ll find 3 informational videos for students. Many of the K-2nd grade students will be watching the videos as part of their classwork, but you have access if you choose to watch as a family.
In addition, next Friday afternoon, October 15th, the Fire Department will have a fire truck on property for our primary students to tour, etc. We are excited to continue our amazing partnership with our Fire Department to bring these kinds of experiences to our students.
Special Education Parent Survey
On Thursday, September 30th a survey was sent out to all parents with students entitled to special education services. I encourage all applicable parents to participate. You voice is critical and this is a great way to share feedback on you and your child’s experiences with special education services in D303! A link to the survey is found here: Special Education Parent Survey
Picture Retakes
Picture retakes are Wednesday, October 13th!!!
Munhall PTO
We have our 2nd PTO meeting of the year next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. There will be an in-person and virtual option. For parents choosing to attend in-person, we will gather in the LRC. All participants will need to wear a mask, and our room will be arranged with seating six-feet apart.
Additionally, I want to thank our amazing PTO for the wonderful lunch that was provided to our staff during conferences yesterday! It was delicious and our staff felt extremely appreciated.
There is no school on Monday, so enjoy the three-day weekend!

Art News:
Artsonia, Munhall's virtual art gallery is up and running! Keep an eye out in the next week or so for parent permission slips that will be sent home with your student as their artwork is uploaded to the free website. Each parent slip contains a link you can use to access your student's artwork. Once the account is activated, you can invite friends and family to be a part of your child's "fan club"! Please contact me if you have any questions: kjontz@d303.org
