Mrs. Loppnow's News & Notes
Week of November 13 & 20, 2017
A Note from Mrs. Loppnow:
Hello Parents!
Happy Friday! I hope this was a successful week for you all! The students continue to work hard and excel in both academics and behavior. I am so proud of this group and how they have come together as one big family! I receive compliments EVERY day about how kind and compassionate they are. During this time of THANKS, I will definitely be sharing my stories of gratitude about my students and their families!
I want to share a very special CONGRATULATIONS to Matt as he had his LAST ROUND of chemotherapy this week! I cannot believe what an incredibly strong young man he is! NO ONE should have to endure the trials and tribulations of cancer during this scientifically advanced "day and age", however, it seems incredibly more unfair when it is a child. The one thing I have learned over the years is how RESILIENT kids are and how when faced with difficulties, they often reach out to comfort those around them. Matt has been a true example of strength and perseverance. SO PROUD OF YOU, MATT!
Because next week is a short week, I will not send updates. However, be watching for photos the following week of Turkey Bingo and THANKFUL letters! The students will also have a "FREE WEEK" from homework. There will be no new spelling words, and no Rocky's Work Log. HOWEVER, the MAPPING project is due on Wednesday the 22nd. I can't wait to see the final products!
I hope you enjoy your extra time with family and friends! I am very THANKFUL for each and every one of you!
Enjoy your weekend, and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

OUR DIRECTION DISPLAY
A Peek into this week and next!
Writer's Workshop: Our work continued as we practiced "Finding Ideas for Stories". This week we focused on "People Who Matter" to us and did a lot of brainstorming of small moment ideas. The students are learning to tell SMALL MOMENT stories which include just one moment in time, not a list of what we did for an entire day. For example, I wrote a story about my son John and a goal he scored in lacrosse. I told all about the small moment, using details to really make the students feel like they were watching it happen with me. I didn't tell about the entire game, or even the resulting score of the game, just the ONE MOMENT within the game which was super exciting! We will continue writing these "Small Moment" stories next week and will learn how to MAP out story ideas about a PLACE that is special to us.
Content: MAPPING, MAPPING, MAPPING! This week we talked about symbols, map keys, grids, and following directions. All of these skills should help your child with ideas to add to their own Map projects. Maps are due on Wednesday! Please remind your child to CHECK OFF all requirements on the assignment sheet. Also, additional symbols and landforms DO count as extra credit! :-) During the week of the 27th, we will review all of our mapping information in preparation of our unit assessment. A review sheet will come home that week to use as a study guide.
Reader's Workshop: "I Mustache You a Question!" That has been our theme this week! Turning our practice to asking questions Before, During, and After reading has been our focus. Using the book The Sweetest Fig by Chris Van Allsburg, students have practiced asking detailed questions that will give them information to better understand the text. Take a peek at the linked video below. What do YOU think happened to Marcel and Bibot? And WHY?
MATH SPOTLIGHT STRATEGY
This week's SPOTLIGHT STRATEGY is...Using MENTAL MATH to Subtract.
