Harborview Express
Welcome to School Year 2023-2024
A Message from Mr. Jonsson
Thank you for welcoming me into your community, as Interim Principal for Harborview Elementary! Please allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Scott Jonsson. My last name has an unusual pronunciation. The first ‘o’ is long. So, instead of “John”, the first part is pronounced “Joan”, rhyming with ‘bone’, ‘cone’, or ‘throne’.
I grew up in Northern Illinois, moving to Fairbanks, Alaska in 1999 to work for Residence Life at the University of Alaska. Before that I was helping to manage a student housing program for Marmion Academy, an all-boys Catholic school with a military program, at a Benedictine monastery.
When I returned to Illinois (to finish-up my master of arts degree in philosophy), I realized I must have fallen in love with Alaska, because I felt a strong heartache. So, I returned to Alaska, as soon as I finished my degree. I moved to Bethel, to accept a traveling academic advising position, where I also began to teach college courses as an adjunct instructor.
While in Bethel, I discovered a new passion: exploring waterways by boat. I also enjoyed traveling, by plane, to surrounding villages on a weekly basis, gaining a deeper appreciation for Alaskan Native culture and for life off-the-road-system. Ironically, this love for rural Alaska led me to Anchorage, where I coordinated student exchanges between rural and urban high school students for the Rose Urban Rural Exchange at the Alaska Humanities Forum.
In 2005, I began teaching art and drama at Seward High School. In 2007, I continued my teaching career in Anchorage, as an elementary art teacher for 10 years, as well as a high school math teacher for 4 years. During my time as a math teacher, I fell in love with Juneau, while completing my principal training through University of Alaska Southeast.
Before moving to Juneau, I was a principal with teaching duties at a K-12 school in Seldovia, AK, where I lived intermittently in my sailboat.
Today, I am honored and privileged to be here in Juneau, at Harborview Elementary School. I look forward to working with parents, students, teachers, and community members. Thank you for all that you do. Together, we will celebrate growth, learning, and excellence.
