What are fossils?
The remains or impression of a prehistoric organism preserved in petrified form as a mold form or a cast in rock.
What type of rock are fossils found in?
Fossils are most commonly found in sedimentary rock, but all sedimentary rocks are not necessarily fossiliferous.
sandstone
Fined grain sandstone with fossil shell imprints
Limestone
Limestone with plants and animal imprints
Conglomerate
Conglomerate with plants and animal imprints
How are they formed?
Fossils are formed when a plant or animal dies and is buried in mud and silt.
Examples of how they are formed
Freezing is a way you can form a fossil. This happens rarely because the animal has to continually freeze from the time of death until the time it gets discovered.
