Chancellor News and Notes
February 26 - March 2
It's Time for STAAR Buddy Sign-Up!
With STAAR testing fast approaching, we need to sign up for our STAAR buddies! How does this work? If you are a STAAR classroom teacher, you do NOT sign up. If you are not a STAAR classroom teacher, or are in another job position, you sign up to become a STAAR buddy!
How do you sign up?
- There will be sign-up sheet on my door in office area
- At least one PK-2 classroom teacher must buddy with a 3-5 STAAR classroom
- 2-3 auxiliary staff (office, ILT/content, paraprofessionals, etc.) will work with the classroom teacher to support the chosen STAAR buddy class
- Sign up by next Wednesday, March 7th !
- Meet with your group to decide everything you want to do for the class
So...What do STAAR buddies do?
- First, you make an awesome banner for the stairwell to celebrate your STAAR buddy classroom! Example: Mrs. Reynold's Rockstars will Rock the STAAR!
- Deadline for 4th and 5th grade banners to be up: Thursday, March 29.
- Deadline for 3rd gradegrade banners to be up: Friday, April 13th.
- What is a banner? A giant poster to fill a large spot on the stairwell (use bulletin board paper), with something fun and catchy for the class to see and feel good! Student pictures can go on if they have photo clearance. If not, then just the names. You can get names from the classroom teacher!
- THERE WILL BE A CONTEST FOR BANNERS WITH PRIZES!!!
- Next, you do nice things for your STAAR buddy class and teacher for STAAR- buy the following items: water bottles, snacks, erasers, individual tissue packets, and other things they can use on STAAR day. If you are not sure what to get, talk to the teacher. This needs to be done for each STAAR day, so you can divide amongst your STAAR buddy team to get it done.
- What else? You can write notes to the class, have your class go visit and deliver treats, cards, poetry, a song and dance- whatever you want to do to pump up your STAAR buddy class!
STAAR testing dates are posted on the calendar, so please look there! I will also send an email out closer to time to remind STAAR buddies!
Questions: Please come ask or email me! :)
Let's earn a month of Jeans passes!
The Primary election is really important this year for public education! Get out and vote, and post a pic of your voting sticker on Twitter, tagging @Aliefisd. If 1,000 selfies are submitted, we get jeans for a month! See below for the specifics from Alief's Twitter page.
Vote! Be part of the Solution!
The link below is the voting guide from KHOU. Please take a look, and do your research. As public school educators, we especially have a stake in some of these races, based on the rhetoric and decisions made in the past years regarding public education. You have a real chance to make your voice heard in this race, as there are several seats that could change hands to candidates in favor of public education. I can't say who to vote for, but I can say, do your research and vote! If you live in Harris County, you can even early vote this week at the Administration building! It is our civic duty to participate in the electoral process, and our moral duty to vote for candidates who can make a positive difference!
Safety is #1: See Something, Say Something!
After our safety meeting yesterday to go over everything Alief and Chancellor is doing to revise and revamp our safety guidelines to proactively be ready if there was every a real intruder, you were also tasked with something to do: See Something, Say Something. Please remember this if you notice anything that administrators need to be aware of, so we can do something to work with or help those students who cause us some concern.
A fun icebreaker for circles!
