Referendum 2018

As you know, the Yorkville Joint #2 School District Board of Education has voted to place a referendum question on the April 3rd ballot. Through this operational referendum, the school district is seeking to close an existing budget gap to maintain its current level of services and programs, update and enhance its educational programs, and attract and retain high-quality teachers and staff. The district must also address deferred maintenance including a roof replacement and the complete renovation of the school's four original bathrooms. To learn more about the referendum, you can access information and resources by clicking here.

Just a reminder... Election Day falls on Tuesday, April 3rd. This date is during Yorkville Elementary School's spring break. If you will not be in town during this time, you can take advantage of the in-person absentee voting. Citizens can vote an absentee ballot in the clerk's office from March 19th through March 30th. Below you will find each clerk's information including hours of operation.

A Message from the Principal

Wow! It's hard to believe that March is almost over. This month has been a whirlwind of learning experiences, celebrations, competitions, projects and field trips. The month of April is shaping up to be no different. Spring break is already upon us. When classes resume, only eight and a half weeks of the school year will remain. As we enter the home stretch, it will be important for students to continue to focus on their learning and end the year by continuing to put forth their best effort.

Summer School 2018

It is our pleasure to invite your child to join us this summer for an adventure in learning! We are excited to offer a summer school program designed to encourage exploration and to foster your child’s love of learning. Students who will enter kindergarten through fifth grade in the fall are eligible to participate in summer school. The theme for this year’s summer school program is Dive Into Summer and will center around the ocean.

This year the program will run from June 11th through July 6th. Classes will meet Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Please note that summer school will not be in session on Wednesday, July 4th. Because the expense would be prohibitive, bus transportation cannot be offered. As a result, families will need to arrange for student drop-off and pick-up. Students may be dropped off beginning at 7:45 and must be picked up by 12:00. It might be helpful to network with other parents to set up a carpooling schedule. Kidz Connection is also available for before and after school care. For information on rates and registration, please contact Kelly or Lindsey at kidzconnectionbasp@gmail.com.

Registration for Summer School 2018 is now open. There is a registration fee of $20. This fee is used to purchase materials. Additionally, each student will receive a summer school t-shirt. Because summer school staffing is dependent upon student enrollment, it is imperative that all registration forms and payment are received by Monday, April 16th. Late registrations will not be accepted.

March Highlights

The kindergarten students are authors! They made and enjoyed pizza and then wrote a how to story to share their expertise.

Many students participated in our annual 100th Day service project. Yorkville School students donated 1,030 rolls of toilet paper that was delivered to Love Inc. and to the Union Grove Food Bank.

The first graders worked hard to publish their very own books! Students spent a lot of time writing drafts, making edits, drawing sketches, and coloring so that everything was just right! Looks like we have some future authors on our hands!

The 5th grade friends helped the first graders get into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit by making leprechaun houses.

The students in the primary department had a great time participating in a Dr. Seuss spirit week. First graders enjoyed a breakfast of green eggs and ham, shared their favorite books with the class and dressed crazy in honor of "Wacky Wednesday."

Third grade students went to Discovery World where they thoroughly enjoyed a roller coaster lab and an introduction to the green screen lab. Students also had fun exploring the bed of nails, the technology stations, the simple machines and the aquarium.

The art room has been a very busy, productive place. Fourth grade students used their creativity to make paper mache garden gnomes. The fifth grade artists completed weaving with beads to make Wampum Belts. Sixth graders used their clay skills to make bobble heads. We have some very talented artists at Yorkville Elementary!

Seventh grade science students worked collaboratively to complete a science lab. The students were testing to see if seeds would germinate when wrapped in a wet paper towel.

Eighth grade students have been learning about Newton's Laws of Motion.

Yorkville Elementary sent a team to the Academic Bowl competition. The following students participated as members of the team: Maddy Erickson, Brian Fonk, Caleb Gruhn, Laurel Anderson, Nick Miller, Abby Nelson, Jackson Barber, Noah Petrick, Kellen Busey, Grace Hansen, Caroline Mork, Lane Anderson, Taylor Diener, Kayla Knudtson, and Brad Robers. A number of Yorkville students earned top rankings including:

1st Place Science (6th Grade) - Laurel Anderson

1st Place Social Studies (6th Grade) - Nick Miller

1st Place Science (8th Grade) - Kayla Knudtson

3rd Place ELA (8th Grade) - Caroline Mork

Congratulations to the 5th/6th math team who competed at the Math Meet. This team earned second place and advanced to the state competition. The 7th/8th team finished three points out of second place but had the highest overall score for the team portion of the competition.

The junior high forensics team participated in the League Forensics Competition. Team members were dedicated and put forth a great amount of effort. Congratulations on a job well done! Below is the list of awards received by the Yorkville students.
