Celebrate National Principals Month #thankaprincipal
Volume 32 Number 11
Quote for the Principal's Journey
“It is impossible to overstate the crucial leadership role principals play in turning a building into a vibrant and safe environment for learning.”
NASSP President, Christine Handy #thankaprincipal
Update From the Executive Director
October is National Principals Month
As the banner above states, "Great Schools Have Great Principals." We have many great schools in every region of Missouri led by great principals. We now have a Missouri Governor who values the role of a school principal. Thank you to Governor Parson for proclaiming October as "Principals Month" here in Missouri.
One of the activities you might want to think about is to encourage a member of the community or a legislator to shadow you for a day. "Shadowing visits provide a wonderful opportunity for policymakers, members of Congress, and congressional staffers to experience firsthand the role and responsibilities of exemplary principals. It also provides an occasion to highlight the excellence in leadership that principals provide to schools, educators, and students nationwide," NASSP. Click here for more information.
Fall Conference...That’s A Wrap
The 84th Annual Fall Conference is now in the books. I commend MoASSP Director for Programming and Development, Doug Mirts, for his vision and attention to detail with all aspects of the conference. Both Katy Kovar and Ginny Stevens deserve praise as well for their hard work and dedication. For many years, longtime school administrator and former MoASSP board member, Neal Penberthy, has donated his time to assist with both the fall and spring conferences. We couldn’t do it without him. His volunteerism goes unnoticed most of the time.
Our Association is very fortunate to have a Board of Directors who have set the bar high. We value their expertise and passion for the principalship.
Lastly, any conference wouldn’t be worthwhile without those actively engaged in schools and the principalship. From the vendors to the presenters to all of the attendees, thank you for helping make the 84thAnnual Fall Conference a success.

With our transfer to a dedicated fiber line, the existing cable was severed yesterday morning. Our internet and phone service has been down for a while. We anticipate being back up by noon today or at the latest, Monday.

MoASSP Board of Directors Meet Sunday Prior to the Fall Conference
Robert C. Howe Service to Secondary Education Award
Since 1988, MoASSP has annually presented a very special award at the Fall Conference to those individuals who have made significant contributions to secondary education.
The perpetual plaque reads...MoASSP honors the following individuals for receiving the prestigious Robert C. Howe Service to Secondary Education Award. Dr. Howe served as the first full-time Executive Director from 1987-1995. Each recipient has demonstrated service to education and steadfast faithfulness to improving the quality of education. They are, “The Consummate Professionals.”
Congratulations to Roger (Dr. Berk) Berkbuegler for receiving the Robert C. Howe Service to Secondary Education Award
Roger graduated from Southeast Missouri State University. A master’s and a specialist degree in administration from Central Missouri State University, and an education doctorate from the University of Missouri. He first served as a teacher in two different districts for six years, worked as an assistant principal for the next four years, followed by twenty-eight years as the principal of Rolla Sr. High School.
During his tenure, Rolla Sr. High School was recognized as a Missouri Gold Star School and as a National Blue-Ribbon School. Roger has also served as a professor in the education department for the University of Missouri. Roger was honored to be named the Missouri principal of the year for MoASSP. He again was honored to be one of the first Missouri recipients of the National Milken Family Foundation Education awards of $25,000.00. He was also named as one of the top ten principals in the country by Pepperdine University. Roger served as president of MoASSP and was elected for two terms as the national coordinator for NASSP and served on the MoASSP board of directors for ten years. As a MoASSP Board Member, Roger was instrumental in establishing a full-time executive director’s position for MoASSP and securing their own building in 1998, currently located on Ash Street.
Congratulations to Dr. Virgil Freeman for receiving the Robert C. Howe Service to Secondary Education Award
Virgil graduated from West Platt High School in Weston, Missouri in 1965. He has a degree in Physical Education from Missouri Western. He received his Master’s and Specialist’s in Education from Northwest Missouri State University. Virgil received his Doctorate from the University of Arkansas.
Virgil served 32 years in the Missouri Public Education system performing many roles.
He started in 1970 as a teacher and coach at East Buchanan High School in Gower, Missouri, eventually serving as athletic director. In 1991, Virgil became the principal at McDonald County High School in Anderson, Missouri. He later took a position as superintendent serving Appleton City and Wright City School Districts before retiring in 2002.
After retirement, Virgil joined the Northwest Missouri State University as a professor and has served in that capacity for 15 years before retiring once again this past July. At every level of leadership, Virgil has strived to put the students first. One of his most recognized accomplishments included helping the Wright City School District to pass their first-ever bond issue in the school’s history while helping them achieve the Accreditation with Distinction honor. But, the most satisfying part of his job is when a student comes up to him and shares what he did for them when they were in school.
