What We Are Learning....
Writing - Because we only had two days of writing, due to the teacher work day, field day, AND our social studies rotations, we read several scarecrow stories and had the students complete a story map to retell the stories. The next day, the students made a story map for their own scarecrow story and then wrote the story. We ended up with some great stories!!
Word Work/Spelling - We have the same set of spelling words for next week. The spelling words are: but, what, all, were, not, we, when, can, said, your. The words will be tested on Oct. 23rd. We will also be learning different spelling patterns of long o and short o.
Grammar- We will continue to learn the past tense of irregular verbs. For example: sat, hid, told.
Math - This past week, we focused on strategies that would help us add such as making a ten, counting on (number line), and doubles. Next week, we will focus on strategies to help us subtract. These will be counting back (number line) and base ten blocks. These strategies will help us as we move into two digit addition and subtraction. By the end of this nine weeks, second graders should be fluent with addition and subtraction facts to 20. Please have them play online math practice games (like on eCLASS) or review flash cards with them. Any help you can give them with this will make two and three digit subtraction much easier for them!! Thank you!
Social Studies - This week, we began our social studies rotations learning about map skills. This included learning about grid systems, the compass rose, and map keys and scales. Next week, we will begin our learning about the five regions of Georgia. Be on the look out from your child's teacher regarding supplies needed for building an edible map of Georgia.
