Thank you to these students who are shining examples of excellent attendance and accountability. These students participated in an attendance awareness video when they were 5th graders at Dodgertown Elementary, and again in a follow up video as 10th graders at Vero and Sebastian River High School. Pictured with SDIRC Board Members and Superintendent Rendell are: Caleb Arcentales, Cornell Wilson, and Harmoni Kimbrough. Not able to attend were Joselhyne Gonzalez and Jeanette Lopez.
Healthy Schools offers free school flu clinics to our school district
As a result of last year’s flu epidemic, we are excited to announce our partnership with Healthy Schools LLC, an in-school health services program. In an effort to keep our schools healthy and attendance high, Healthy Schools LLC will be providing OPTIONAL no-cost, in-school flu shots to our students and staff at each school location during the week of October 15th. You may have already received an email with a registration and consent form from Healthy Schools regarding your child receiving a flu shot at their school. Please feel free to fill out the online consent form, or, a hard copy of the consent form that your child’s school will be sending home in the near future. If you did not receive an emailed consent form, and would like to register your child online, visit www.indianriverflu.com for online registration and consent forms. After your child’s school sets a date for their flu clinic with Healthy Schools, you will be notified of the day that the flu clinic will be happening at your child’s school. If you choose for your child to not receive a flu shot at their school, simply disregard all consent forms. In partnership with Healthy Schools, we hope to give each of our students the opportunity to remain flu free.
Student Spotlight: Derek Davey, Oslo Middle School
Oslo Middle School 8th grade student, Derek Davey, read a Proclamation at our 9/25 Business Meeting for Disability History and Awareness weeks to be recognized by the SDIRC the first two weeks in October. Job well done, Derek!
School Spotlight: Osceola Magnet School Explorer Ensemble
Thank you to the Osceola Magnet Explorer Ensemble under the direction of Ms. Janine Jones. These 4th and 5th grade musicians entertained the crowd with “Celebration” and “Osceola” at our Board meeting on Tuesday 9/25.
Classroom Spotlight: Ms. Bachmann's Art Class at Fellsmere Elementary School
Fellsmere Elementary celebrated its first International Peace Day on September 21st. Kindergarten and 1st grade students created Peace Posters, and grades 2, 3 and 4 made Pinwheels for Peace. The pinwheels were “planted” outside the front of the building. The idea is that the students write their wishes and hopes for peace in the world, community, homes and schools on one side of the pinwheel and draw pictures on the other. When the pinwheels are planted outside, the wind catches the wishes and spreads them throughout the world. A pinwheel is a childhood symbol – it reminds us of a time when things were simple, joyful, peaceful.
Students Receive Perfect Score on statewide standardized assessments
These elementary and high school students were celebrated at our Board meeting on Tuesday 9/25 for achieving perfect scores on one or more of their statewide standardized assessments. We are looking forward to celebrating our middle school students who received perfect scores, and our students who made significant gains at our October Business meetings!

Substance Awareness Center of Indian River County
The Substance Awareness Center of Indian River County (The Center), established in 1989, is focused on two initiatives – substance-abuse prevention and substance-abuse recovery. These two initiatives are the basis for the programs we offer. The Center is also the fiscal agent for, and lead agency of, the Substance Abuse-Free Indian River Coalition (SAFIR). Our LifeSkills® Training program has expanded to now include an after-school program for at-risk kids, at the SAC office and at the four middle schools.
The LifeSkills® Training program has been selected as an exemplary, research-based prevention program by: American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Drug Strategies, Inc., National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and the White House Office of Drug Policy. It is an all year, three-year program for grades 6-8.
