Aflred Day Hershey

Personal Biography:
-born in December 4th 1908 in Owosso, Michigan
-Alfred Hershey married Harriet Davidson in 1945
-he had one son named Peter

Scientific Biography:
-worked on bacteriophage
-bacteriophage is a virus that parasites a bacterium by infecting and reproducing inside of it
-worked with scientists like Max Belbruck and Salvador Luria

Scientific Legacy:
-demonstrated with the blender experiment that DNA was the genetic material of life
-helped come up with research that helped other scientist develop a Polio vaccine
-in 1945 he proved that phages, viruses, were capable of spontaneous mutation

-born in Austria in 1822
-he was a monk
-he never was married and he never had any children

-research heredity in plant hybrids
-he enrolled and studied at the University of Vienna
-used pea plants to do do heredity experiments

-information he gathered from his experiments helped many future scientists
-considered father of modern genetics
-discovered the Law of Segregation and the Law of Independent Assortment

-never was married and never had children
-died in New York on September 2, 1992

-studied at Cornell and the University of Missouri
-studied south American maze on the cellular level
-she gathered information on genetic cross overs

Scientific Legacy:
-recognized as one of the most important scientists of the 20th century
-was given the nation medal of science in 1981
-was the first woman to receive an unshared Nobel prize in the field of genetics
