The SLANT Strategy
Definition
This strategy focuses on teaching good learning behaviors and skills that help students pay attention, concentrate, and learn. It could be used in any subject area and is a good way to better hold students accountable for paying attention and being an active member of the classroom since you can clearly see whether or not they are meeting the expectations. The use of the acronym SLANT reminds students of the five behaviors that increase their ability to pay attention:
S it up.
L isten.
A sk and answer questions.
N od your head.
T rack the speaker.
Why it Works
This is an effective strategy because it incorporates ideas from behaviorism and meaningful learning (a cognitive process where learners relate new material to things they already know). Additionally, it is a practice of authoritative teaching. First, this strategy is a good way to provide students with clear expectations on behavior. This is important when it comes to managing a classroom because the clearer a teacher’s expectations are, the more efficient the classroom will be. A teacher can use a cue (quick verbal or nonverbal signal to indicate to a student what he or she should or shouldn’t be doing) to quickly let the student know that the teacher recognizes the behavior and to quickly remind the student of what he or she should be doing. Having SLANT employed in the classroom makes it easy to correct students without disrupting the entire class or calling too much attention to a small problem. This strategy also makes it easy for teachers to see who is on task and who isn’t so that everyone is held accountable for good classroom etiquette. By utilizing SLANT, part of everyday classroom management is to practice good learning strategies. SLANT ensures that all the students are actively paying attention, which is the first step in learning new material. By having the students ask and answer questions, a teacher is encouraging elaboration (a cognitive process where learners add on to new information based on what they already know), which is proven to be one of the best learning strategies.
An Example
The SLANT strategy would be best employed in a classroom if the teacher were to explain it to students on the first day. The teacher should post the acronym and the words it stands for somewhere in the classroom where it is visible to everyone to serve as a reminder of what is expected. If a student isn’t using SLANT, the teacher can call the student out and point to the poster to quickly and quietly remind the student of what he or she should be doing. The teacher can also acknowledge when students are doing a good job with certain components of SLANT to serve as a more positive reminder of the teacher’s expectations and motivate other students to follow suit.
