International Day of the Hijab
I wanted to share with you an idea that some staff around our district will be participating in next Friday, January 31st that you may be interested in. The information below was shared with me by a colleague, and in my opinion is enlightening.
International Day of the Hijab is an opportunity for all of us to learn more about why women wear a hijab and why it is important to some Muslim women. In a very few countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and Pakistan women are oppressed and have no choice—they are required to wear one. To us who are free, this is completely against everything we believe to be fair and equitable. In many countries Muslim women choose not to wear a hijab. Some countries, both in Europe and Muslim majority countries, laws have been passed banning some or all types of hijab in public or in certain types of locales. Muslim women feel pressure to wear and to not wear a hijab. No one should ever feel forced to wear a hijab.
World Hijab Day is a time to help make a hijab feel less “foreign” or different and help non Muslims be sensitive to the stigma that many Muslim women face when wearing it such as stares and negative comments.
There are many forms of hijab and there are many reasons why women actually choose to wear one. Women who choose to wear it often view it as a form of empowerment. These women feel that people aren't judging them by their looks, but rather paying attention to their words and character.
This Friday, January 31st, if you are interesting in participating, you can join others and choose to wear a hijab to join other women and girls who are at Glen Lake and around the world. You may want to join those who are forced to wear it and those who have made the choice to wear it. I have spoken with a few Somali moms about this idea, and they love it. Leyla Farah, mother of Omar, Sabireen, and Sabriye, has offered to lend some scarves and hijabs to staff who need them. She is also willing to come in on Friday morning to give a brief tutorial for how to wear a hijab. I told her that I would first gauge the interest and participation and get back to her.
If you could, please let me know if you would like to participate on this day.
Helping the Homeless
Teachers, as you transition around the building and see a sign, take a moment to point them out to your students to help promote. If you aren't a teacher, feel free to add items you want to donate to the grocery bag of your favorite teacher or grade level !?!?
