Language Arts

Reading - We are continuing to use strategies to decode unknown words and become better readers and writers! Comprehension strategies will be a whole group focus and small reading groups will begin this week! Your child might refer to them as Book Clubs.

Writing - This is a class of very strong writers! The kids love Writer's Workshop and are so eager to share their successes. We continue to focus on habits of good writers like using our tools, organizing our work, and never giving up. Our literacy coach, Mrs. Myrick, will be in our class this week to begin Author's Conference. She and I will conference with students individually to compliment and guide our young writers.

Tests are each Friday. I have finally recorded all the data from past spelling tests and I appreciate your patience! Those tests will come home this week.

Spelling City Link:

Also look for a Spelling Homework Menu in your child's folder. This is a list of activities your child can do at home to "spice up" their practice choices.

Place value

We have begun our understanding of tens and ones place value and continue to build upon our fact fluency. Each day we have a number talk and discuss the most efficient problem solving strategies. Our math coach, Mrs. Johnson, will be in the classroom this week to help our mathematicians make connections between addition and subtraction.

3D or Solid Shapes

We will continue to study 3D shapes. The kids have made 3D shapes with paper, the favorite being the cube. One student exclaimed, "It's just like brick in Minecraft!" It's wonderful to see the connections they make to what we are learning in school.

Thank you for the wrapped mystery boxes! The kids loved guessing and unwrapping the 3D shapes that hold things like GoGo Squeeze, muffins, fabric softener, baby food, and Legos!

Moby Max

This is a great online math tool that your kids can use at home. I've registered all our kiddos and their usernames/passwords will come home in folders this week.

Social Studies

We will begin a study of communities and all the different components that make a community successful.

We will discuss seeds and how they grow and change. On Thursday, the Apple Lady will come talk to 1st grade and tell us all about one of our favorite fruits. I hope she brings some to try!

Class Dojo

Thank you for logging on to Class Dojo and talking with your child about the positive (and negative, if any) points that they have received. Please initial their behavior calendar each night.

**Class Dojo has a new update where I can send you photos throughout the day. Please be looking for those!

* Book Orders due Friday the 26th.

*Hat Day is Friday the 26th. Wear a hat for $1 to support Kiwanis Club.

*Please send a healthy snack for your child. We have our snack time around 9:00am. If kids have any leftover snacks from the morning, they are also allowed to eat them after recess in the afternoon. Learning and playing makes a kid hungry!

Take Me Out of the Bathtub and Other Silly Dilly Songs

This is one of our favorite Read-Alouds/Sing-Alongs in class and apparently we aren't the only ones who enjoy it!
