Desert Heights Elementary Newsletter (July 2020)
"Principally Speaking"
Mr. Frydman
- School will be starting a week late; Grades 1-6 will start on 8/17/20, and Early Childhood and kindergarten will begin on 08/24/20. This is so our teachers can have extra days of professional learning addressing social distancing and distance learning.
- Students at Desert Heights Elementary School students at District elementary schools will attend Monday through Friday in person.
- All students, staff, and visitors to school will be required to wear face coverings unless they have a medical exception. This is for their safety and the safety others.
- Physical distancing will be maintained. In order to achieve this, all rooms will be at 50% capacity and 6 feet apart. (See below for a draft schedule for a grade level).
- Families will have the option to keep their students at home and utilize distance learning through their zoned school or North Star Online School. They will be accepting applications through the end of July.
- There will be enhanced and frequent disinfecting of surfaces.
- Fresh air will be flushed through the HVAC system.
- There will be scheduled and supervised hand washing with soap and water.
- The availability of hand sanitizer and disinfectant in every classroom.
- Families will be expected to self-screen at home and if students are feeling sick, they should not come to school.
AT DESERT HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL:
- Students will eat breakfast and lunch in their classrooms.
- The cafeteria and Library will be used as classrooms.
- There will be no morning recess prior to school, the gates will be opened at 9:20am and students will line up outside, 6 ft. apart, and their teacher will take them into the classroom.
- The following grade levels will be on a rotation schedule (see below) and will have multiple teachers to accommodate safety and social distancing (Grades 1, 3, 4, 5).
- The following grade levels can be social distanced without having to rotate (Grades K, 2, 6).
- During recess, classes will have designated areas on the playground and will limit who they have contact with.
- Masks are mandatory for all students except for students with medical exemptions. If a student doesn't have a mask, one will be provided to them by the school. If a student chooses not to wear one, parents will be called and the option of distance learning will be provided to the family. Wearing masks is a safety issue and we want to keep our students, families, and staff safe.
I appreciate our community so much and want your children back at school. I know many people have different feelings about social distancing measures, wearing masks, and distance learning. I respect everyone's viewpoint and it is my job to keep the students, staff, and families as safe as I can. Please respect our efforts to do this. If you would like to talk, I am more than happy to meet with you either in person (6ft. apart) or virtually. I have made it very easy for you to schedule an appointment with me online. Once again, I look forward to meeting you and your children. Please be safe and see you in August.
David Frydman, Principal.
Principalmente hablando
Just click here.)
David Frydman, Director.

Tracy Rios (5th Grade Teacher)
Tracy Rios is a teacher with wide experience. With a degree in Government from Cal State, Sacramento, she ran a home-based business and homeschooled three sons while taking additional classes for her teaching credential and M.Ed., in Cross-Cultural Teaching. Joshua Gibbons (2nd Grade Teacher)
Shae Keeley (Early Childhood Special Education)
Prior to moving to Nevada, I created a Music Therapy program for Mansfield ISD, in Mansfield, Texas where I provided Music Therapy services to students ages 3-22 in both the self-contained and integrated classroom setting. It was there where I found my love of creating music based educational curriculum to help students reach their academic goals and objectives.
Upon moving to Nevada, I created a Music Therapy program for Nevada Early Intervention Services where I was able to provide music therapy and specialized instruction to children ages zero to three. I created a music and play - based curriculum to help children meet their developmental milestones during our home visits, inclusive community-based playgroups, and community-based infant toddler programs with inclusive sites such as Early Head Start and surrounding Child Care Centers included in the Early Intervention Placement Program.
Not only do I love teaching children, I love teaching other professionals on how to support development and academic goals through the use of music and play. As an Early Childhood Education Teacher, I feel very fortunate that I will be able to continue my love of teaching by combining both music and play to help my students reach their full potential here at Desert Heights Elementary.
