The Owl
The Newsletter of OECHS -- September 7, 2019
School Resumes Monday
OCS, CCCC, and OECHS will resume classes on Monday. As soon as we get information about making up missed days/instructional time from OCS and CCCC, we will pass along the information!
If any of our Owls have been impacted by the storm, please contact james.strope@onslow.k12.nc.us or call 910-938-6701 so we can help find resources to assist you!
Students are encouraged to work together in their Houses and clubs to organize Hurricane Dorian relief efforts. There are many in eastern NC and the Bahamas that need our help!
North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Accountability Results
State accountability results only tell part of the story of a school's academic success. Last year, our students outperformed both the state and global averages on AP World History and AP Environmental Science, as 10th graders! Our Owls have been successful in their college classes as well, with over 95% of students scoring a C or better in all of their college courses!
Our Owls have also become leaders in their school and in the Onslow County community as a whole, spearheading efforts to improve the lives of our fellow citizens and promoting social and environmental causes.
With pride, we watch in anticipation as our Owls continue to build a legacy of success!
Junior News
Juniors are also reminded that OECHS has the use of a mini-bus for field trips and college visits. If you would like to organize a college visit, email james.strope@onslow.k12.nc.us so we can start making preparations.
Those that have already organized the college visit to N.C. State University will need to see Mr. Strope on Monday for a permission slip.
OECHS Open House for Freshmen and Sophomores: September 19th (4:30-6:30)
Drama Club
Tryouts for our upcoming production, "Don’t Try and Wake Him, Hand Me the Shovel" will be held on Friday, September 13 in the CCCC Bodenheimer Auditorium. We will walk over as a group at 2:30 p.m. The production agreement, audition scripts, and order of auditions are posted on Teams. Students are to memorize and perform from the posted scripts and need to return the signed agreement! Please direct questions to the Drama Club adviser, Rebecca Huggins.
Italy and Greece Trip
Good news! We have added an additional bus to the 2021 Greece & Italy tour. With this additional bus, we have a few extra spots for the upcoming tour. This comes with several perks! We will have a free bus and an additional tour guide, at no additional cost. I would like to open these spots to student travelers only. If you are a parent or family member of a student who wishes to travel, please know that we have several parent travelers already signed up. I want to be sure our students are given priority on the available spots we have remaining. Any additional spaces that are not filled, will be filled by adult travelers who are currently on the waiting list. If you are on the waitlist at the moment, you will be notified by EF when you are bumped up to a traveling spot. Once you are moved to a traveling spot, you are responsible immediately for the monthly payments on the balance of the trip. If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Huggins. You can sign up for the trip here.
Guidance
Starting next week, I will be meeting with sophomores one on one to talk about their
junior and senior year. Be thinking about what your major will be and what colleges
you are interested in attending. If you are not sure, it is ok, we can talk about that too!
Active Minds
mind·ful·ness
1. the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something.
2. a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while
calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.
Quiet Body
- Set a timer for 5 minutes.
- Sit in silence with your eyes closed. Notice the parts of you that are
touching the ground or chair.
- You may notice sensations of discomfort perhaps and itch or a strong
desire to move. These will not last long. Just as thoughts come and go
through our minds, so do sensations.
- Try to focus on breathing into the sensation of discomfort.
What happens if you do not move?
