PTO NEWS

VIRTUAL TALENT SHOW:

Bummed we’re missing out on the Bell-Grammies Talent Show this year? We are, too, so let’s take it virtual. Please fill out this google form: https://forms.gle/wAJ6yT8auKp7JHtQ8


Please record your student’s talent submission (no longer than 2 minutes) and send to htrask@comcast.net or send a link the to download. Please insure you have sufficient lighting & volume for your video and record in horizontal/landscape mode. We will compile the submissions and post the 2020 Bell-Grammies to our FB page and include a link in the weekly e-news.


By submitting your video you are giving permission to post your child’s video. Submissions are due by end of day Thursday, April 30th. If you have any questions please reach out to Heather Trask, htrask@comcast.net.


PTO MEETINGS:

OPEN PTO BOARD AND COMMITTEE CHAIR POSITIONS:

The PTO of Bell Graham is searching for some helpful parents to chair a few events and programs for the 2020/2021 school year. We are also looking for a very important board position as Kristin Jessup will finish her term as VP of Communications. If someone is interested in filing her position or the others listed below, please let us know. Contact Kim Nudera, VP of Committees at: kimberlybednarz@hotmail.com.


The PTO VP of Communication's role ensures information is easily published and exchanged within the PTO community.

Responsibilities include: Attend monthly PTO board planning meetings, attend monthly business meetings with principal & front office, attend monthly PTO meetings, and participate in school-wide communications. VP of Communications maintains and manages information posted to the PTO website, sends PTO e-Blasts weekly, and works within Facebook to post important information to the BG community. This role is always looking for opportunities to improve communications (e.g. simplify volunteer signups, surveys, and advertise events and important news in regards to the PTO, etc.)


After School Enrichment “ASE” Chair(s): **Jennifer Benesh** would like work on a team for ASE. We are looking for 1 or a few co-chairs to work with her.

Committee chairs are required to meet with committee to help plan/organize fun enrichment classes. Volunteers from this committee are needed for check-in/ check-out for each day of ASE, for finding teachers and organizing classes, and sometimes for leading classes. After school enrichment has historically been a month-long program held in February. Details for next year may/can change. These classes will allow your child to explore new hobbies and learn new skills. Classes are parent-taught, teacher-taught, and outside vendor-taught. Committee meets in Fall and tries to confirm most classes before Holiday break.


Book Club Chair(s):

The chair helps facilitate the club meetings, picks the books, and arranges club schedules. Club met starting in November and then did meetings every few months. This can be a flexible schedule and can be run however chair dictates.


*“One Book, One School” Summer reading chair:

In past years, the Book Club Chair helped pick the Summer read, along with the principle. They also organized a fun Summer event tied to the book read by the entire school. The Book Club chair and Summer reading chair can be 2 different people or the same person.


Movie Night:

Organize 1-2 family movie nights during the school year. Run “penny-wars” at school lunches and morning for kid’s to vote for their favorite movie. Free popcorn and water purchased and handed out at event. Open to new ideas for this event and fun movie choices.


Greater Education Foundation Basket:

Chair puts together an auction basket to raise money for D303 student scholarships. Basket is auctioned at a Gala event in 2021. PTO has $200 in funds allocated for the basket and donations are also added.


“Parent Express” (Office Help Committee):

Help recruit and communicate to our most helpful BG parents. Certain parents sign up to be available and contacted for special volunteer opportunities that pop-up throughout the year at Bell Graham.


STEM CLUB, CHESS CLUB, OR OTHER?:

The PTO would love for an additional club to be offered, but we would need a chair person to volunteer.

4th & 5th Grade Student Survey

Student Survey on Remote Learning and SEL:

D303 would like each 4th and 5th grade student to participate in a student survey on the topics of remote learning and social emotional learning (SEL). Students in 6th to 12th grade are taking a similar, but different survey.


D303 is partnering with Northern Illinois University to gain insights from students (grade 4 and up) related to remote learning. The first part is a jointly created survey on how remote learning is going in general. The second part contains established questions designed to help the District understand the overall social emotional well-being of students during remote learning.


The survey will close at the end of the day on May 2, 2020.

All aspects of student information will remain confidential. If you would like additional information on the survey, please contact David Chiszar, Executive Director Assessment & Accountability (david.chiszar@d303.org), or Patti Palagi, Director of Instructional Interventions (patti.palagi@d303.org). The survey will capture student insights connected to remote learning, social-emotional well being, and coping strategies/supports accessed during this unique time. NIU has established a partnership with D303 through their federal Project Prevent and Address Bullying grant. We are excited to gain additional insights into students' perceptions of remote learning in order to assist us in directing our academic and social-emotional programming.

Returning Student Registration

Returning Student Registration for 2020-2021 has moved to an online format. In years past, parents completed the necessary paperwork in paper format. This year, all acknowledgments and authorizations are contained in a single electronic, online registration form that will be easily accessible from most electronic devices (computer, Chromebook, and Smartphones).


Parents can sign into the Returning Student Online Registration form using their Home Access Center (HAC) credentials, select individual students, and complete their registration. The form is located in the Parents/Community menu of the District website.


Registration fees for elementary and middle school are available in Pushcoin and billed to reflect the early bird discount of $10.00 if paid by May 22. High School fees will be available in June. For families who may qualify for a fee waiver, and are not directly certified by the state, a 2020-2021 district fee waiver application will be available on the District 303 website in July, accessible from the Parent/Community menu.

Reaching Out Survey

As we continue to face times of great uncertainty our needs are ever-changing. What seemed manageable at the start now seems overwhelming. What started out as much-needed family time might be causing stress and strife among family members. Are juggling the roles of parenting and being a remote learning teacher, the loss of jobs, the feeling of isolation, and the uncertainty of when it will all be over causing you or a loved one to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or like you need more support? In an effort to meet the ever-changing needs of our BG Community (students and families) we have created a brief survey to get a better sense of what is needed and how we can provide support.


Bell-Graham is very fortunate to have a full-time Social Worker, Mrs. Brandt, and a full-time Psychologist, Mr. Cornwell on staff. The three of us will continue to work together to address the needs revealed within this survey. Thank you in advance for taking time to complete this survey.
