FACE MASKS OPTIONAL BEGINNING MONDAY
WHOLE SCHOOL MASKING LIFTED!
Great News! Our COVID positive numbers have sharply decreased in the last 9 days:) We have been given permission to lift the whole-school mask mandate after 10 days instead of 14. That means our whole school masking requirement ends today (FRIDAY, JAN 28) at dismissal. We hope our numbers will stay low or cease, but note that our other mitigation strategies will remain in place. Handwashing, using hand sanitizer, distancing to the extent practicable, cohort grouping, spraying after school, etc. will all continue to be practiced at school.
CHANGE IN MACOMB COUNTY QUARANTINE GUIDELINES
Recent changes were made regarding how UCS will approach the isolation and quarantine of students and staff for in-school exposure. The most important pieces have remained the same:
- Keep those who are sick home
- Staff/families must report positive COVID-19 cases and isolation/quarantine remains at five days
- The district will notify families of positive cases in school buildings
- Cases will continue to be reported on the district’s COVID-19 Dashboard
Individuals will not be identified through contact tracing; instead the entire class where a positive case was reported will be notified of the potential exposure.
- All students and staff in the impacted classroom should monitor for symptoms.
- Those who have or develop symptoms should isolate/quarantine and test for COVID-19.
- Others may quarantine individually but are not required to unless symptoms develop.
The MCHD website reflects the new protocols.
Your partnership remains critical. Families should continue to self-screen every morning and students that do not feel well should remain at home.
DISMISSAL PROCEDURE - CHANGE TO NOTE:
We will no longer be allowing students to be picked up by parents using the “Drop Off” lane. The number of cars attempting to use this morning drop off lane at the end of the day for dismissal has increased to the point of impeding parking lot flow and traffic in and out of our school grounds. If you have previously used this lane at dismissal, plan to designate and practice another pick up location with your child/ren. Beginning this coming Monday, 1/31/22, the lane will only be used for drop off at morning arrival time (see below for details on drop off from August newsletter) as originally designed.
ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
School officially begins at 8:40. Students may begin lining up outside their classroom door and supervision begins at 8:30 AM. Use the pictures below to plan your route and drop-off location. if you are walking your child to their doors, plan to park in a parking spot indicated. To use the drop off lane, your child MUST be ready to exit (able to unbuckle quickly, open vehicle door with backpack, close door) and MUST exit onto the crosswalk ON THE PASSENGER SIDE ONLY.
ARRIVAL:
8:30 - Doors open. No adult on duty before this time; children must be accompanied by an adult prior to 8:30 unless enrolled in SACC.
8:30-8:40 - Student arrival; teachers at doors indicated
8:40 am - Bell rings for start of day. Teachers close doors and begin attendance and instruction
8:45 am - Students will be marked absent after this time
8:45 am and afterwards - Students arriving after this time must enter the Main Office Door (Door #1), be accompanied by a parent and signed in as 'tardy'.
- The drop off lane in the parking lot will allow students to exit vehicles on the passenger side upon arrival and and walk to the crosswalk and then to their line up spot.
- Supervision does not begin until 8:30. Parents DO NOT leave your child unattended or drop them in the drop off lane prior to our supervision times.
DISMISSAL:
We will have staggered dismissal times again this year, with walkers/car riders/pickups dismissed from their door locations at 3:20 PM. At 3:28, teachers will walk all bus students to their bus for departure at 3:30 PM.
We have close to 700 students attending Ebeling this year. The parking lot cannot accommodate everyone with a parking spot and may be 'closed' to car entry at dismissal times. Be prepared to park on the street (Haverhill or Tilch) and walk to the school property for pick up.

UCS Wellness Podcast
The UCS Wellness team is happy to announce the second episode of our podcast series. The team worked with community members to create a podcast regarding different areas of physical, mental, and social health for UCS staff, students and families. These podcasts are available on the UCS Wellness page. UCS Wellness - Utica Community Schools (uticak12.org)
Oftentimes when loss occurs, whether it be through death or beyond death entirely, grief is experienced by those impacted by the loss. Yet, the grieving process is unique to each individual, including children experiencing grief.
This episode of the UCS Wellness Podcast explores the different levels of grief and how we can cope as well as what to look for to help identify grief in children. We called on SandCastles Grief Support Program, a free, local community-based program to help us with the topic of grief. This episode features Malow Junior High School counselor, April Raupp, speaking with SandCastles program supervisor, Michele Kreft, LMSW.
UCS BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING SCHEDULE
LUNCHROOM HELPERS NEEDED!
We have openings for lunch supervisors at school daily. The lunch supervisors work both inside the lunchroom (helping students open lunch items, handing out napkins, etc) and supervising at recess (indoors or out), and typically work between 1.5 and 2 hours daily. Accommodations can be made for those wanting to work less than 5 days per week as well!
Those interested - please call the school office to request information on how to apply.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
ABSENCE
- If your child is going to be absent call 586-797-4799 and leave us a message.
Your child will be excused from class for illness, bereavement, recognized religious holidays and medical or dental treatment that cannot be scheduled after school or on weekends.
Your child is responsible for makeup work. Homework requests may be made for an absence of two or more days in the case of both excused and pre-excused absences. Homework requests require 24 hours to process.
VACATION POLICY
- Absence for family travel during scheduled school days is discouraged.
However, should family travel be necessary, parents must submit a written request to the teacher or principal for a pre-excused absence at least one week in advance.
Arrangements to complete classroom assignments can be made with the teacher. You can arrange for home study through the school principal should your child be absent from school for an extended period due to physical disability or illness.
LATE ARRIVAL
- If a student arrives late to school, the parent must accompany the student into the office, and the student must be signed in before he or she can go to class.
