CDS Middle School
November 23rd, 2018
From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
The Thanksgiving holiday has arrived and I hope everyone is feeling a bit of gratitude for the many good things in our lives. Research has shown that gratitude can enhance our relationships, improve our physical and mental health, increase our empathy, and even help us sleep better at night. Today, I'm grateful that our CDS community continues to learn and grow and stay positive even as winter begins and final exams approach.
I hope all of you have restful Thanksgiving break!

DalMUN is now open for 7th & 8th Grade
This the Junki Won, the Secretary General of DalMUN2018!
As a senior in the class of 2019, I’ve attended over 18 Model United Nations since 7th grade. With this experience, I am now the leader of DalMUN2018.
DalMUN is an acronym for Dalton Model United Nations, which began in 2014 and has been annually open to CDS High School students for 3 days beginning from the start of winter break (12/14 ~ 12/16). In this conference, we simulate the actual United Nations conferences that take place with countries’ representatives from all around the world! Students represent nations in a committee as delegates and discuss agendas related to foreign affairs to reach an agreement.
It is a good opportunity for students to gain a good experience with MUN, to learn the basics of MUN (DalMUN is for beginners! We will help them a lot so they don’t have to worry about getting stuck!), to help improve students’ debating skills, to help students make friends and strengthen relationships with each other, to win awards, and to appeal extremely well in the future to universities.
For more information, please click on the link to the DalMUN website, and read the letter we've written for parents (linked below) in both Korean and English.

2018-19 Science Fair
CDS was proud to hold its annual middle school Science Fair this past Wednesday. Twelve teams participated with four demonstrating their results in the form of a poster and the rest presenting their findings to the middle school as a slide show presentation.
Each team worked hard over the course of about six weeks to carefully plan, prepare, carry out experiments, and summarize results. It was a challenging experience which encouraged students to put their scientific knowledge and skills to the test. I would like to thank all the teachers and students who participated in this event for all of their time, energy, and investment.
*Be sure to check out their presentations by clicking the button above.
Here are the CDS Science Fair winners for 2018!

Student Council - Fill the Sleigh
Currently, laundry detergent is needed the most, shampoo and conditioner is the medium level, and chips, snacks, toothpaste, and toothbrushes are placed in the low level. To take part in Fill the Sleigh, students will collect or buy new items and put these items in their Dalton Cup team box in front of the middle school office. Two student council members will be in charge of this section each day and will play the role of keeping track of the name of the student and the item the student brought in.
Student Council will start receiving donations for Fill the Sleigh from November 26th to December 12th. We are all lucky to have all we need, however, the kids in Happy Home do not have all the items needed. How about we share our happiness by donating items to the children of Happy Home?

Analyzing Characterization in 8th grade English
Each student chose and analyzed a major character within the text, to begin with, focusing on deeply understanding that particular character's actions, thoughts, and motivations. After that, each student used the information gained from his/her analysis to create a potential "teammate" for his/her character of focus.
The students' created characters were all meant to be original, logical, and justifiable, making this task fun, but challenging. Of course, some very impressive characters were yielded by both 8A and 8B classes!

Grade 8 Brainstorm Session in Self Determined Learning (SDL)
PE Class with Mr. Monette
We also looked at wading in water, doing flip turns and how to dive. It hasn't been all work though, we made sure to put time aside for a little fun with some water polo and a little recreational time in the pool as well. Hopefully all the students can apply these skills in the warmer months at the beaches or while traveling on vacation!

Studying Character Traits in 6th grade English
They ended the class by participating in a character game, where they had to guess the name of the character that was held to their forehead. Great fun was had by all, and wonderful creativity and critical thinking was shown!

Cultural Enrichment via Hands-on Learning in Chinese Classes
Cultures encapsulate languages and languages convey cultures. In order to provide an integrated Chinese language education to CDS students, the Chinese teachers planned and organised hands-on activities for the students to better understand Chinese culture on Monday 19 November.
The students enjoyed paper cutting, model dragon boat making, shuttlecock making and kicking and Chinese food cooking and tasting. Laughters and smiling faces created a favourable milieu for understanding Chinese culture and learning Chinese language on this cool day of early winter time.

Advanced Spanish - At the Movies: Movie Review of Coco
Students from Advanced Spanish Class in Middle School watched the movie Coco to better understand the Hispanic Culture.
This allowed students to learn about an important traditional celebration in Mexico - The Day of the Dead. For their speaking test, students researched information about the director and the awards Coco had won. Then they wrote a short summary including the description of a character they selected.
To aid them during their presentation, students designed a poster that illustrated what they had learned. This was also part of their listening test as students needed to ask questions and take note of the responses each student provided. Please have a look at the participation of Seongeun Kim and Doheon Lee
