Wheeler Flash
November 2016
Message From the Principal
Dear Wheeler Families,
I sincerely hope all Wheeler Families had a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving Break! It is hard to believe December is upon us, unreal!
My message to you this month will be sharing our grade level reading goals for our school. Each grade level has set a goal in the area of reading for the purposes of collectively motivating all students in each grade level to read MORE! Teachers and students will track their goal which begins January 3rd until May 31st.
GOALS:
Kindergarten: Students will read 50-75 books
Grade 1: Students will read 75 books
Grade 2: Students will read every day for a minimum of 100 days
Grade 3: Students will read a variety of genres (biographies, fairy tales, mysteries, informational texts) and track and graph the genres they are reading to identify trends in their reading.
Grade 4: Students will read 500 books
Grade 5: Students will read 500 books
Not if but WHEN, we achieve these goals, as a school, we will celebrate with our end of year reading celebration!
Please continue to encourage your child to read with or to you each night!
Thank you,
Mr. B.
Principal, Frank T. Wheeler Elementary School

Grade 3 visits Indian Rock Nature Center
Grade 3 visits Indian Rock Nature Center
Wheeler third graders traveled to Indian Rock Nature Preserve on Nov. 22nd as part of a social studies unit of study on Cultures across Connecticut. On this field trip students observed firsthand (and sampled) the various foods that were gathered and cultivated by the Native Americans. They traveled back in time and explored two authentic Native American wigwams where they discovered how the Native Americans lived in harmony with the natural world. Students participated in an investigation of materials used to create tools. A tractor drawn hayride through the preserve was also a part of this experience.

Charity Basketball Event
Charity Basketball Event
The Plainville Police Association held a charity comedy basketball game to raise money for the P.A.L. Basketball League and Robert Holcomb Scholarship Fund. It was held on November 11th at 8pm at PHS. A day or two prior to this event, one of the comedy basketball team players visited Wheeler and sent a message to our 4th and 5th graders about being kind, standing up to someone who may be picking on you and working hard and persevering.
