Global Day of Play!
On Wednesday, February 5th, our school will be participating in Global School Play Day 2020 (GSPD.) GSPD has been promoted by Psychology Today and is being celebrated at schools around the world. You can learn more about the benefits of unstructured play by visiting the official GSPD website: www.globalschoolplayday.com. I am inviting all of our students to bring in things to play with on this very special day. Here are some examples of things your child may bring in (be sure your child’s name is clearly marked on all items):
Non-Violent Toys (no weapons)
Legos, blocks, cardboard boxes, etc.
Dress-Up
Puppets
Stuffed Animals
Board Games
Puzzles
Sports equipment
*no electronic devices*
All teachers have been encouraged to spend at least one hour of the day with their students engaged in free play. We will still provide all academic intervention services during the day as well as run our regular specials schedule. Though our play day will be unstructured, it will still be supervised by teachers. It is my hope that this one day of play will inspire families to plan for more unstructured playtime during non-school hours.
Be sure to check in on the Sheridan Hill Elementary Facebook page as well as on Twitter #sheridanhillsharks and #GSPD2020 for the great ways our children are celebrating the importance of play.

School Attendance
Why Does Attendance Even Matter?
- Starting in Kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10% can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
- Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help catch students up.
News from the Office
Coming Early? Running Late?
What if there is a change for the end of the day?
We recognize that there are times when you might need to pick up your child early from school or need to change their of placement for the end of the day. A note at the beginning at the beginning of the day is preferable.
We ask that you contact the school early in the day if you need to make a change to your child's after school routine. Please do not depend on voicemail or email communication with the teacher as they may not get a chance to check these forms of communication while working with children. Please contact the school office before 1:00 PM with the change request.
