WEEKLY LITURGICAL READINGS AND REFLECTIONS

Second Sunday of Lent

Sacred Scripture

LK 9:34 - 35
While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.

Message of Mercy

Go to Mass Like Sinners

The “Confession” which we make at the beginning [of Mass] is not “pro forma,” it is a real act of repentance! I am a sinner and I confess it, this is how the Mass begins! We should never forget that the Last Supper of Jesus took place “on the night he was betrayed” (1 Cor 11:23). In the bread and in the wine which we offer and around which we gather, the gift of Christ’s body and blood is renewed every time for the remission of our sins. We must go to Mass humbly, like sinners, and the Lord reconciles us.

- General Audience, February 12, 2014

Reflection

What is the Lord saying to you through the prayers, the readings, and the Eucharist?

St. Gabriel Hall of Silent Reflection on Stations of Cross

Our hall has undergone its traditional adornment at this sacred time of year. Duly adorned with stations of the cross affixed to wooden crosses, beneath essays of students describing their gratitude for the growth of their faith infused into their education. Throughout this Lent, as students and staff pass through this hall, they are called to remember ... the way of the cross Jesus walked for us ... and how we can transform through prayer, fasting and giving ...

Grade 7 Math Students learn Design, Inquiry, Research, critical thinking, problem solving and innovation in Dream Room Project

Using math skills of budgeting, measurement, computation, scale drawings, organization and narrative summary skills, 7th grade students in Mrs. LaSpina's class learned to use design principles in their project.

Solving problems involved in building their "Dream Room", students used inquiry and research to find real world "building blocks", and used comparison, analysis and innovation to solve real world problems of cost and space.

Students working in collaboration and small groups

It is a very common sight around St. Gabriel School to see students gathered in small groups, enabling and supporting collaboration and exchange of ideas and knowledge and skills. Teachers and aides act more and more as facilitators giving instruction to all groups, then group to group, then individual to individual as needed.

Grade 4 Students turn classroom lab into "Maker Room" to learn design skills in STEM lesson

In a specially designed STEM unit lesson, Mrs. Kylee Percival is guiding her students in science to learn the design process of inquiry, critical thinking, innovation and creativity, and finding solutions and building prototypes to solve problems in the real world.

Mrs. Percival challenged her students to work in collaborative groups to solve the problem of her not being able to see students waiting around the door of her classroom in the hall.

They learned to brainstorm, design essential questions of inquiry, carry out investigations, create ideas for possible devices that could be built to solve the problem, build innovative prototypes, analyze results, make new modifications, and record analyses and observations.

Some interesting devices are evolving .....
