Statewide K-3 Literacy Workshops
Sponsored by the Idaho Coaching Network
What is balanced literacy? What does it look like in my classroom?
Our beliefs about literacy instruction inform the practices we employ in our classrooms. Being consciously competent about what we believe and building next moves based on these beliefs build a balanced literacy program. Essential to this program are the elements of foundational literacy in the primary classroom. These skills build literate students through the purposeful and strategic balance of formative assessment and targeted instruction in phonemic awareness/phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing (spelling imbedded) and reading for joy.
This one-day workshop will allow primary grade teachers to confront their beliefs about balanced literacy, develop strategies to enhance foundational skills instruction that are aligned with these beliefs, and ask and answer hard questions to build a stronger literacy rationale and competency.
