EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Week of October 30, 2017
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
I would like to begin this newsletter by recognizing one of our wonderful 8th-grade parent, Mrs. Rookmin Manharaj for her leadership with the Red Ribbon Week activities this past week. Thank you, Mrs. Maharaj, for all your hard work to organize such a wonderful Red Ribbon Week for all of our students. FSA loves you! We also thank our wonderful Parent Organization and all other volunteers for making FSA a great place for our kids.
If anyone asks you why FSA is a great school choice, please tell them that it is because of all of us. I do not know how to thank our committed parents. Just this past week, I have sent an e-mail asking our parents to volunteers as mentors for our high school juniors and in just a week we have all of our mentors set for our high school juniors. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! :) We are very excited about this mentorship program for our high school kids.
As we end another month and welcome a new one, I would like to continue by looking back at some of the events from the past month. We celebrated the final total from our FSA Coins for a Cure Fundraiser from September with a grand total of $5,015.68!
October has been a full month. We began by finishing out Volleyball and Cross Country with fantastic seasons and many wins! Our teams grew together, as did the students individually. Our High School Students participated in the PSAT, FSA held a D.I. Skills Workshop for the state, Boys Basketball tryouts were held, there were many exciting field trips, and we finished off the month celebrating Red Ribbon Week and the fight against drugs. On Friday afternoon, a select group of students got to select winners for the RRW door competition. The winners were Ms. Evans in 1st place, Mrs. Khan in 2nd place, and Mrs. Judge in 3rd place; you can see their doors, as well as everyone else's in a picture gallery below. I was very impressed with the creativity of the door designs this year!
Congratulations to our Math Olympiad Team again on another impressive victory over the weekend at the Rockdale Math Competition! You can see pictures and more details of this event below! Also, good luck to our Model UN Team on their upcoming competition at Georgia State University this Thursday and Friday!
We have a lot coming up in November!
- We are beginning the month with the ABRSM Theory Exams on November 4th. The "ABRSM’s Music Theory exams aim to give students a thorough understanding of the building blocks of music, starting with the basics of rhythm and notes, and going on to cover harmony and counterpoint, composition, and a broad knowledge of western music, including composers and their works, structure, style and period."
For more information regarding these exams, you can visit https://us.abrsm.org/en/our-exams/music-theory-exams/
- Daylight Savings Time ends on November 5th so don't forget to set your clocks back an hour and enjoy that extra hour of weekend!
- Don't forget that Moms' Night out is on November 10th starting at 6:00 pm! There is more detailed information about this event below, but we would like as many moms there as possible! This will be a very fun night out!
- We have our first Basketball game of the season on November 8th! Be sure to come out and support our FSA Mustangs on what will be an exciting season!
- Also, don't forget to submit your video audition for this year's Talent Show by November 12th! We will notify the students selected to be a part of the show by November 14th! You can read more information about the show below.
Keep an eye on our calendar for other events as they come up, and keep an eye out every week for these Newsletters to keep you up to date on what is happening here at Fulton Science Academy!
Please continue reading below to see more of the events that have been going on and are coming up! There is so much to look forward to!
We would like to encourage all of our families to apply for the State Tax Credit Scholarship program as it greatly benefits our students.
This program provides an opportunity for taxpayers to redirect Georgia tax dollars and, in turn, provide financial aid assistance to FSA students. We would greatly appreciate it if you would please apply and choose Fulton Science Academy Private School as your designated school.
Please also inform your friends, co-workers, and relatives who live in Georgia; they can also participate and help support our school.
For more detailed information, please use this link:
COMMUNITY SERVICE
As you are aware, we encourage our students to volunteer in and around their communities. We have already had many students participate in volunteering events in the area such as the Rivers Alive Clean-up Program. As students continue to participate in these kinds of volunteering events or on their own in their communities, please remember to log your hours. Mrs. Cantrell will be logging service hours for Middle School students and Mrs. Selvakumar will do the same for High School students. Please turn in any log sheets or artifacts to them. The requirement is 10 hours per semester. You can pick up a Volunteer Hours Sheet at the front desk and use it to log your hours each semester.
With Warmest Regards,
Kenan Sener,
Principal

In anticipation of Book Fair Week, FSA students are invited to dress up as their favorite book character on Friday, November 10. Here are a few guidelines for costumes:
1. Must be a character from a book, not just any costume.
2. Scary monsters or beasts are not permitted
3. No masks are to be worn. Minimal face painting is allowed (e.g, whiskers, nose, freckles, etc., but no full-face makeup)
4. No weapons or props of any kind, including toys.
5. Students must have their character approved by their language arts teacher
Teachers who participate are eligible to win gift certificates to the book fair taking place in the Media Center from Monday, November 13 through Friday, November 17. The three classes with the best costumes will win a surprise.

Future City (Academic Team)
-Mr. Turan
Our Future City Team also attended a workshop at Kennesaw State University.
Students performed three hours of hands on activities about scaled models, city design, and the main problems facing elderly citizens.
Science Olympiad (Academic Team)
Middle and High School Science Olympiad students spent Friday evening preparing for their first tournaments by attending a lock-in. Volunteer parent coaches wasted no time in getting their students to work. Mr. Nash worked with students building towers and Mr. Kersey guided students in building their Battery Buggies, Roller Coasters, and Hover Crafts. Mrs. Bhatt and Mrs. Lewis challenged their Disease Detective students to solve the cause of a food borne illness with staff members playing the “victims.” Mrs. Fernandez reviewed the digestive system with her Anatomy & Physiology students.
After two hours of intensive work, students enjoyed a taco bar for dinner and chocolate brownies for dessert. Following dinner, Potions and Poisons coach Chris Nash, demonstrated the properties of dry ice, by using it to carbonate apple juice and make ice cream.
Later that evening, middle school students competed in a Mystery Architecture challenge. Students were given 50 pieces of uncooked spaghetti and 4 packages of gummy snacks to build the tallest tower that would support a boxed roll of tape. Winners Sam and Ben built a tower that exceeded 50 cm. The next activity was a Fast Facts competition led by Coach Mrs. Sanders. Using actual tournament rules, students had 6 minutes to complete a grid with terms on a specific subject and beginning with a specified letter of the alphabet. A total of three rounds were played.
The next item on the agenda was stargazing; however, just as soon as the students made it outside, a bank of clouds swept in, making viewing anything impossible. Nevertheless, students enjoyed late night rounds of outdoor games. Once they were back inside, students settled in for the night, waking up early the next morning for a quick breakfast before heading home.
Many thanks to our parent coaches, Mr. Parlak, and Mrs. Sanders for helping us run this awesome event.
-Mrs. Stathos

High School & College Counseling Corner
October has been a busy month for FSA high school students, with Admission Directors from GA State University, Kennesaw State University, Purdue University and George Washington University, visiting them. It was arranged in an interactive style, where the Directors talked about their college life, admission process, available majors, scholarships and financial aids. Students were so enthusiastic to learn about each college. We have students with various interests from engineering, politics to artificial intelligence. They were interested in exploring the best program each college has to offer.
Our Juniors are getting ready for their college application process for next year by attending various college fairs and meetings with admission directors from different colleges.
GA TECH BIO BUZZ WORKSHOP
GA tech hosted a Bio Buzz workshop from Bio Technology department, where they had several seminar, lab visits, and hands on experiments for high school students. Our FSA high school students participated very enthusiastically in the event.

A Message from the Clinic
Here are some additional things you can do to prevent the spread of the flu and other illnesses:
- Teach children not to share personal items like drinks, food, eating utensils, or other personal items such as towels, combs, and brushes.
- Properly dispose of used tissues when coughing and sneezing, and use your elbow, arm, or sleeve instead of sneezing into your hand.
- Wash athletic practice clothing each day and shower after any contact sports.
- Stay home if you are sick, especially during the first days of the illness when the symptoms are the most severe and the infection is most contagious.
- Return to work or school only when symptoms are improving and when you've had no fever for at least 24 hours
- Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu.
Let's go to costa rica

STEAM Team "Recyclables Turned to Art" Needs your Help!
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
As you know we are doing a course called STEAM for grades 6-11. Students have already submitted topics, team members, and they have received their steam teachers. Our 7th grade steam group: Aileen H. Sydney X. Ranjani V. Nina T. and Derek Z. need certain materials that are not easily accessible. We need donations of items like old toys, broken toys, used school materials, magazines, old books, small broken pieces of anything, small knick-knacks and trinkets that you do not want or need around your house. We also really need bottle caps. There are boxes in the Cafeteria and by the Front Desk where students can drop off their donations. They are at the entrance right where they walk in first thing in the morning before they are released to their lockers and right by the trophy cabinet in the Lobby. There are multiple boxes, each labeled by category. All students need to do is bring in their donation(s), drop it off in one of the bins and one of the students from our team will come by at the end of each week and collect the materials. Note that they don’t have to be a specific color, shape, or size. Anything that you would easily throw away you can donate. Thank you for your participation!
Vocabulary Bowl
The 2017-18 Vocabulary Bowl is starting soon. How will Fulton Science Academy rank in Georgia and in the nation? It’s up to your students.
What is the Vocabulary Bowl? It's a competition where students learn vocabulary and work together to propel their school to victory. Last year, over 38,800 schools participated and collectively mastered over 26.8 million words!

Home Visits - A Fun Way to meet your teachers!
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
