Newsletter Week 7 Term 1
Newsletter 07 - 17 March 2021
Many of us have really enjoyed watching America's Cup races this past week. Team New Zealand certainly models many of the values we encourage at school. It seems like a good time to introduce and remind our families of our school values.
Our school values put Christ at the centre. The cross displays our primary values, linked to the head, hands and feet of Jesus. We talk about being part of the St Mary's CREW - showing Courage, Respect, Excellence and Wonder. We want our students to be Curious, Creative, and Caring and to also display Integrity, Perseverance, Confidence, Passion, Resilience and Gratitude. We'll explain the JOY acronym in another week's newsletter.
This week we have had three more classes attend camp. Room 3 went Mon/Tues, Room 2 Tues/Wed and Room 5 headed off this morning and will return tomorrow. The weather has been kind, the camp programme fun and challenging and our parents' support amazing. Thanks to all who have been involved.
We are so lucky to have wonderful parent support at St Mary's. Our PTA volunteers have been busy too - setting up the Hall and finalising preparations for our Gala on Friday night.
It might be a good time to start thinking about getting winter uniform organised for Term 2. If you want to keep things really easy you can order uniform online via our app or website - the School Office will phone you once it is ready to collect/or gain your permission to send it home via your child.
We welcome the following staff - Nicole Lovegrove is back with us in a part-time role -supporting learners across the school. Kerry Alemann is helping out temporarily as a Teacher Aide and Maria Sewell has been appointed as our new Librarian.
Thanks for all the donations that have been sent in for the Gala. The PTA and their willing helpers have done a wonderul job preparing for Friday night. We have a very generous and willing community. We look forward to seeing you and your friends and family, 4-7pm on Friday.
Wishing you a Happy St Patrick's Day.

Kia ora everyone
Classes have made cards for the Sisters of St Joseph nuns in Auckland. They have been posted, hopefully, to arrive in time for St Joseph’s Day. Last week our RE Leaders visited Sister Carina’s grave (Sister died at the end of the 2020 school year) to lay some flowers on behalf of St Mary’s School students. Please do come and join us for our Mass this Friday for St Joseph’s Day - 9am at the Church.
On Wednesday 24 March, we will have Rice Day. This is a day our school eats rice for lunch while we raise money for Caritas. Caritas is a Catholic Aid organisation. Many children in the world eat a bowl of plain rice as their only meal of the day. We want our students to be able to know what that would be like. So please don’t send or buy lunch on WEDNESDAY 24th MARCH, we will provide rice for lunch. A huge thanks to Lucky Star Indian Takeaways who will cook our rice for us, and also to Viv Radley who helps with the rice on the day. Please send along a bowl and fork or spoon for your child to use next Wednesday for your child's rice. A donation for Caritas would be appreciated and this will be collected in each class.
Kia manaaki atua
Invitation to St Joseph's Mass this Friday 9am in the Church
2021 is the Year of St Joseph and our school was started by the Sisters of St Joseph. You are invited to join us this Friday for our special Mass in honour of St Joseph.
This is the prayer that will be prayed at the beginning or end of every Mass.
Hail Guardian of the Redeemer, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
To you God entrusted His only son; in you, Mary placed her trust;
With you Christ became man
Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father, and guide us in the path of life,
Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage and defend us from evil. Amen.
