Patrick Demarchelier
Princess Diana
Background History
Princess Diana first contacted Patrick Demarchelier in 1989, and she wanted him to be her photographer. Patrick looked through paparazzi photos to see when Princess Diana looked her best. He concluded that she looked the prettiest when she was laughing, so he knew that's how he wanted her to look in the pictures. He found it challenging because it was hard for her to relax, and she didn't pose like a model. He hired hair and makeup artists to get her ready before the shoot. This picture was taken in a studio. It is famous because it captures her natural beauty. She died shortly after this photo was taken, so this photo serves as a remembrance of her.
What can we learn?
As I said earlier, this photo was created. I think that the style of this photo is simple, so we can learn that you don't need a lot of props to make the photo interesting. The portrait also doesn't have to be in color to make it pop. You can make the portrait interesting by the angle and pose. I think Patrick tried to use texture to make the portrait pop. There is texture in the pillow she is holding, the skin on her chest, and her hair. We can also learn that you don't need to use photoshop to make a portrait beautiful. Sometimes the more simple the portrait is, the better the outcome can be.
My Opinion
I really like this portrait of Princess Diana. I think Patrick did a good job of capturing her beauty. In my mind, this photo is a portrait because the focal point is on Princess Diana. Nothing in this photo is distracting me from Princess Diana. I think that Patrick did capture her personality, because she is smiling and laughing. Patrick said before the shoot that she had a bubbly and fun personality, so he wanted to capture that. I wouldn't change anything about this photo.
