Chapman Family Weekly Update
September 29, 2019
The Kindness Assembly was a great success and it was fantastic to be able to have all of our students and staff in one space comfortably! We continue to be grateful for our new and improved spaces at Chapman. We are still in need of a CROSSING GUARD if anyone is interested! See below for more information.
As this year has progressed and I have received feedback from our Chapman community, I understand that there are times when increased or improved communication from me would help to create shared understanding of events and support the needs of students. I understand that although I don't always have all of the information in every situation, my lack of communication leaves people to fill in the gaps where that communication is missing, something that can create confusion and increase stress, especially in situations where building safety is the topic. I want to take this opportunity to apologize that my actions have not matched my intentions for our community and for any stress that this may have caused you or your family. While it is never easy to hear that your actions are not matching your intentions, it is important to me to improve the quality and efficiency of my communication moving forward so that my priorities around building safety, student learning, and strong culture remain apparent in every decision and communication from me. I appreciate the feedback and welcome your input and ideas as I continue to strive for improvement in this area.
Coffee with the Principal: It's back! Come join me on October 9th for coffee and treats to sit down and chat about the upcoming school year. This is a great opportunity in a smaller setting to ask questions, give feedback, and/or to socialize with other parents. I look forward to seeing you there!
Attendance Calls: When your child is absent or tardy and you leave a voicemail on the attendance line you may still get an automated call home. Please know that your voicemail will be entered into the system as soon as possible. However, due to the busyness of the office, sometimes those messages are not able to be entered into the system before the 9:30 call home is made. You do not need to call back to report a second time if you have already reported the absence/tardy. We apologize for any inconvenience.
October Lunch Menu: Please see below for the updated lunch menu for October!
Q-Communications: Please make sure that all of your information (phone number and email address) are updated in Mi-Star. We now have the availability to send you information via text. I hope this will speed up getting important information to you! Also, please check your email Spam to make sure that my emails to you are not in there. Once you move them to your inbox, your email should recognize that it is an important email sender.
The Guidance Center at Chapman: Learn more about how the Guidance Center can assist your student and family at school and through outside resources at the November PTO meeting! As always, feel free to call the office for any information if needed before the November presentation. Groups at Chapman will begin towards the end of October and be facilitated by Sarah Holton. We are very excited to have her as part of our team and an additional resource for our students and families.
Halloween Plans: We will be celebrating Halloween on Thursday, October 31st. The parade will be after lunch and all classroom parties will be in the afternoon. More details and exact times will be coming soon.
Crossing Needed: We need a crossing guard at Chapman. This is a paid position through edustaff. You will be a rock star by safely crossing our students before and after school. Its easy and fun! Please contact the board office or Chapman for more information.
Lunch Monitors Needed: After being a crossing guard, you can also be a lunch monitor! This is also a paid position through Chartwells. You can call Chapman or Gibraltar Food Service for more information.
Carpool: Our carpool line in the morning can still get better and more efficient. Please pull as far as possible up in the lane. Students should exit from curbside/passenger side only for safety purposes. Please be patient and do not pass on the left- we have two crosswalks and we do not want anyone hurt. Also, DO NOT move the orange cones (or drive over them) before or after school. They are there for safety purposes as well. Thank you for all of your help and patience.
Important Information from previous newsletter:
Attached below is a letter to all elementary families from all the principals in the district explaining the safety procedures regarding our new entrances and attendance procedures. They are the same for every elementary building. Please make sure you read this letter carefully and contact me with any questions or if you need clarification.
Doors will open at Chapman every morning at 8:25 AM. If your child eats breakfast at school, please have them at school at this time so they have ample time to eat and they don't miss instruction time.
School and instruction time begins promptly at 8:38 AM. Dismissal is at 3:43. Kindergartner students will be released out the back classroom doors. Parents can pick up on the playground by the basketball hoops. First and Second grade will be released out the main entrance. Third through fifth grade will be released at the entrance to the left of the main entrance.
Lunch times have been adjusted for some grade levels. See below for each grade level's recess and lunch times. This year we are scheduling recess before lunch. Other Important Information
Birthdays:GSD's policy does not allow cupcakes/sweets for birthdays. We would love to celebrate your child's birthday with non-edible treats such as pencils or a book donation to the media center or classroom.
New Flexible Seating for 2nd and 3rd Grade:
2nd and 3rd grade classrooms have brand new furniture in their classrooms. There are a variety of seating options and we are excited about the flexibility that this seating will provide our classrooms.
Volunteer Forms and i-Chat Requirements:
All volunteers in the building will be required to fill out a volunteer form and the school will run an i-Chat check for safety and security purposes. You should find these forms in your first week packets from your teacher. My advice is to fill these out and turn them in as soon as possible. Remember ANY volunteer needs to fill these out. You can pick up extra copies in the office as needed. This requirement does include volunteering for classroom parties.
Continued Updates Throughout the Building:
We are not done! We still have some improvements coming to the building that will happen over the school year. It is very exciting to see the continued updates and improvements throughout the last year!
