Literacy Design Collaborative
Southern Region Education Board
What is the purpose of the LDC?
We always say that all teachers are reading teachers and support literacy in our schools. But, most subject teachers have not been trained on how to do that.
- The Literacy Design Collaborative provides a framework for all teachers to create units of study to teach reading, writing, speaking, and listening in any subject.
- LDC provides teachers with structured but flexible tools that can be used again and again, with any program, practice or curriculum, to drive student growth.
Begin With the End in mind
LCD uses backward design. Begin your lesson planning with the standard.
Example
1. Start with the standard
2. Teachers create an assignment that maps to the goal, using a template.
DESIRED RESULT
- A well-crafted essay that demonstrates student’s ability to cite textual evidence…, determine central ideas…, determine meaning of words and phrases…Etc.
With desired results defined, teachers move on to create a task to produce the results
3. Teachers create intermediate steps that prepare students to tackle the task.
What skills do the students need to complete this assignment? Some examples are:
Preparing for the Task Skills
» Task engagement
» Task & rubric analysis
The Reading Process Skills
» Active Reading
» Note-taking
» Vocabulary
Transition to Writing
» Bridging The Writing Process Skills
» Organizing ideas
» Writing a thesis & introduction
» Developing supporting paragraphs
» Writing a conclusion
» Revising and Editing
» Final Draft
4. Teachers fill in the intervening instruction so students reach the goal
Finally, teachers design specific instruction for each skill required by students.
- Instruction for specific skills are organized into “mini-tasks” In this example, a mini-task for a Note-Taking Sheet corresponds to the Note-Taking skill required to complete the task
Literacy Design Collaborative training will equip our teachers with an instructional design system to teach literacy seamlessly with their subject area.
LCD will provide
- Training for trainers, principals, and teachers
- Provide access to web-based courses to spread the use of the literacy tools and strategies to other teachers
- Conduct monthly electronic progress meetings with state and district LDC/MDC leaders to identify concerns and recognize best practices.
- Provide LDC trainers to deliver professional development services.
