A Message from our Director, Rene Baker
Carpool Safety !
Last week one of our students was nearly hit by a car during carpool. Please, please follow the carpool drop-off plan that has been in place since the first day of school. The local police department devised this carpool plan in order to keep our children safe and to allow proper traffic flow. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT ENTER OR EXIT CARS THAT ARE PARKED ON ANY STREET. If you do not want to wait in the school parking lot queue, you may follow the pick-up procedures for the North Shore parking lot. If you are picking up at North Shore, please park in a parking stall to pick up your children. Do not pick up at the curb. Students and adults should only cross the street at the designated crosswalk.
Please review the carpool plan with anyone who transports your child to or from school. Anyone picking up children from school will be held accountable for following the plan. The carpool plan diagram can be accessed on our website: https://mariamontessoriacademy.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Traffic-Map-2016-2017.jpg . The carpool plan explanation video can also be accessed through our website: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Av109AjuwQ&feature=youtu.be.
Drivers should never be on their cell phones during carpool – including holding the phone to your face or staring at your phone in your lap. It is imperative that drivers devote their full attention to what is going on around them during carpool. The lives of children are at stake.
Thank you, MAPA, for organizing the safety committee. Thank you to all the parents who volunteer as crossing guards every morning. Thank you all for your attention to this significant safety issue.

Parent Survey
Keep track of your volunteer hours with Track It Forward
Maria Montessori Academy Parents Association (MAPA) is very excited to announce that effective December 1, 2017 we will be using Track it Forward to schedule and record volunteer hours.
We feel that using track it forward will help us provide the most positive experience possible when signing up for and recording volunteer hours. This program will allow families to track their hours on their own electronic devices, send out reminders for sign ups, and help us become a more centralized Montessori family.
Families are asked to donate 40 volunteer hours a year per family to the school. As a member of MAPA (all parents are automatic members) the MAPA presidency is trying to provide as many opportunities to complete this act of service yearly and Track it Forward will allow families to sign up to volunteer.
In sending your children to a Montessori school you are taking the initiative towards bettering your children and families. MMA’s mission statement is “Education for a better world” and by volunteering you are providing opportunities to help make this a better world.
The reason I volunteer is to provide my children with opportunities they may not get at other schools. “Only a life lived for others is worth living.” — Albert Einstein. By volunteering you are giving of yourself to your children and the children of others. Volunteering does not have to be a big sacrifice of time away from the family or money spent, many teacher at the school offer opportunities to volunteer at home and MAPA has opportunities to volunteer where you can bring your children.
Ways you may be volunteering and not even know.
· Attending a MAPA meeting
· Room mom calls and asks you to cut something out or bring something to the class
· Coming into the school and reading with children
· Bringing in food for an activity
MAPA in cooperation with the MMA is trying to say “thank you” to those that have sacrificed time and volunteered this year by giving those families with 10 service hours completed an “act of service.” The details are still in the works but we want everyone to know that we appreciate and value all of those that have volunteered.
How Track it forward works:
You can sign up in one of two different ways. On the website https://www.trackitforward.com/site/mapa or email mapa@mariamontessoriacademy.org with your family’s last name and the names of your children and we will send you an invite. Once in you can track your family’s hours and sign up for volunteer hours.
Again we appreciate all that our wonderful MMA families do!!!
“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” — Elizabeth Andrew

Teacher Spotlight! Jill Blazer (Lower Elementary)
How did you find out about Montessori Education? When I first heard of Montessori, I thought it was a style of parenting. After I came to the first substitute training at MMA and learned some of the philosophies of Maria Montessori, I was so impressed that I pulled my two elementary students from our local public school and enrolled them at MMA.
How long have you been at MMA? I was a substitute the first year it opened and I was hired as a full time teacher in January 2011.
What is your favorite thing about MMA? The philosophy and the community! Having a daughter in High School, who attended both Elementary and Junior High at MMA, I see the value of a Montessori Education. I am very grateful to Nancy Lindeman and her vision, which continues to thrive. I look forward to seeing our students making positive and peaceful changes in both their own lives and their communities.
Favorite Food? Mexican
Favorite Color? Yellow
Favorite Movie? Smokey and the Bandit
What is something that people would be surprised to know about you? I have so many relatives who either work, attend or have graduated from MMA. Ms. Melanie in the office is my daughter, Ms. Kari (Librarian and Upper El assistant) is my sister. Ms. Autumn in the office is my cousin, and my mom and nephew are weekly volunteers in our Library.
