Diversity on Campus:
The University supports diversity. They host a variety of events that aim to create opportunities for involvement across campus. The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) Staff & Faculty Association is an organization that shows how the University of Maryland supports Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Staff and Faculty.

Maryland University College Park was created on March 6, 1856. It was originally named Maryland Agricultural College. It was founded by Charles Benedict Calvert. April 9, 1920 the campuses at College Park and Baltimore merged to form the University of Maryland (College Park).
FUN FACT:
Testudo, Maryland's mascot, has been the mascot for over 60 years.

Events or Trends
A trend at the UMD is the “colors of the school”- Red, White, Black, & Yellow… these are also the colors of the Maryland state flag. March Madness is an event Maryland university takes part in. March Madness is the biggest basketball tournament of the year that many schools play in and its very competitive. UMD homecoming is a yearly event where both graduates and people that still go their come back to celebrate the beginning of the school year.
Importance to Community:
The UMD is important to the community (and the country) because it provides a place to learn for many high school graduates and other people to get a good education and get a degree. This is important because once you have a degree and you graduate from college, you are able to get a job, which is important because once you get a job, you get money, and when you have money, you can get a house and provide for yourself. So basically going to college (UMD) is the start of your adult life.
