SPEAKER SERIES
If your student is interested in sports, business, or psychology, encourage them to join one of this week's sessions in our Speaker Series, offering Compass Academy students the opportunity to engage in conversations with people from a variety of careers.
Sports Facility Management/Customer Service, Ray Murphy
Wednesday (11/10), 2:15-3:00 pm:
Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Nick Costakis
Please have your student sign up through their Work-Based Learning course in Schoology. Students must attend at least three speaker sessions throughout the school year, submitting the related written reflections along with the eight project-based activities in the Schoology course to demonstrate competency in Career Exploration, which is worth a half-credit. This is something students should continue to work on each Wednesday.
Lunch orders are due by 8 am Monday morning.
MAKE-UP PICTURE DAY
MANUFACTURING PATHWAY AND OPPORTUNITIES
Did you know that Compass Academy is offering students the opportunity to take classes in the advanced manufacturing pathway, which will allow them to earn industry-recognized credentials and could lead to apprenticeships and career opportunities? We also recently learned that we will be awarded a substantial grant from the Technology & Manufacturing Association to purchase industry-standard CNC machines to further enhance the educational experiences students will be able to receive in our STEM lab. The St. Charles Chamber website has a number of videos from manufacturers and business partners from around the region to help show students about all of the related opportunities available within our communities.
Also, to cap off a month of activities highlighting manufacturing, the Chamber will host a live Panel Discussion on Tuesday, November 9th from 9:00 - 10:00 am for students to ask follow-up questions of the participating companies. Compass Academy students who are interested in participating in this event may register here. Registered students will receive more information about how to access the event.
CITY OF ST. CHARLES JOB SHADOW PROGRAM
The city of St. Charles is offering a job shadowing program that could provide opportunities for Compass Academy students on Wednesdays next semester! In the new career pathway job shadow program, which is open to St. Charles high school students interested in exploring a career in municipal government, students can shadow people in many career fields, including law enforcement, electrical engineering, accounting, construction, communications, and many more.
Students may schedule up to three different job shadow experiences per school year, during which they can explore work sites, ask questions, see demonstrations, and learn about education and certifications. Students will be responsible for transportation to and from the City. The date, time, and length of the job shadow will be scheduled outside of school hours directly with the City’s job shadow program coordinator. See the back of the Registration Form for a complete list of job shadow opportunities.
Interested students should complete the Registration Form and return it to Mrs. Stanley or Ms. Ohlson at Compass Academy.
HONORING VETERANS ON VETERANS DAY
In recognition of Veterans Day this Thursday, the Compass Academy staff is inviting any student who has a family member or significant person in their life who is an armed forces veteran to share this information with Mrs. Stanley, if desired, in order to give special recognition to veterans with a connection to Compass Academy:
- the veteran's name,
- their branch of service,
- their connection to the student (relative/friend/neighbor, etc.),
- a brief description of where/when they served,
- and a digital photo of the veteran (if the student would like this to be included).
Students can either email Mrs. Stanley this information or create a Google slide and share the slide with her by Wednesday at noon. She will then compile the names, photos, and information into a slideshow.
During advisory on Veterans Day, students will watch the slideshow honoring these veterans who are connected to our Compass Academy community and will engage in a related activity.
ATTENDANCE CALLS AND STUDENT PICK-UP
Also, please remember- if you need to pick your student up early from school, after calling the office to inform us of this, park in the lot off of Oak Street (Staff Lot) and ring the buzzer at door 17, which is next to the baseball field. Your student will then sign out and meet you outside.
