Differentiation in the classroom
Teachers,
As you plan your ELA differentiated lesson to present during our CIV, remember the "What" (content, process, product, environment), "How" (student readiness, interest and learning profile) and "Why" (motivation, access to learning, challenge, opportunity) of differentiation.
Additionally, as you plan your lesson, please ensure your learning target and success criteria are clearly posted.
Data - FIRST SEMESTER
Teachers,
We have a lot to celebrate because of your hard work and dedication!
Great job to all in bringing lessons that are intentional, rigorous and demanding which ensures that our students receive the best education possible.

First up from the counselor’s office:
> SBAC: DID YOU CREATE YOUR SBAC LOGIN? Sign me up to train your kiddos on the SBAC tools. So far I met with 4th and 5th grade teachers and gave them the updated SBAC information. Third grade and SpEd meetings TBD. GREAT resource: LROI > CAASPP Resources link provided on left column.
> Middle School: All 5th graders received a middle school packet January 8 that includes important dates and events. Posters are posted around campus with important dates and events. I had 15 families from Kettering/Naples attend my 5th grade Parent Meeting. I have sent home ParentVue Activation Codes to the families that do not have at least ONE parent/guardian on ParentVue. Middle School Applications on ParentVue Feb.11-24. Applications ARE NOT first come-first served.
> SST: So far we have had six SSTs, four upcoming SSTs and two completed 504 meetings. Our school psychologist continues to complete Initial Assessments along with completing a few Re-evaluations. Keep those SST referrals coming so we can create
> ELPAC Testing: Annual ELPAC testing will begin next month. I will be pulling your ELL kiddos throughout the month.
> GATE Screening: GATE post-screen all complete. Parents received a letter during the Thanksgiving break. GATE identification will not happen until May 2020. The GATE Office will create a rubric with all LBUSD Assessments, the TAB form teachers complete, along with their GATE Post-screen score to assist in identifying who qualifies or not.
> LB BLAST Mentor Program: STARTS IN FEBRUARY!!! I will let you know your mentors names and contact information as I receive the schedule from BLAST. Please turn in your BLAST student referrals on the form I placed in your box before we left for break if you have not done so already. I will create a profile for each student so the directors of BLAST can match up the college mentors from CSULB and CSUDH based on the schedule and needs of the student you provided on the referral form. They will either be an undergrad senior or a post-grad student. They will be assigned to students (you refer) 2x/week for a one hour/session. They will work with their mentee on anything you would like (math facts, writing, reading comp., etc) for eight weeks. I am looking forward to implementing this awesome free program at Kettering.
> SBAC Interim Assessments may start as early as Sept. 16. See email sent Friday regarding the video to watch to activate your account since we missed the first email :-) . Please go to www.caaspp.org to login and click on “FORGOT PASSWORD”; follow directions to create your new F#ncy!8 password and save it in a secret place. You will need to sign an electronic SBAC Affidavit once you click on the green TOMS button. Once you create your new password you can begin accessing the CAASPP Interim Assessments and Reporting System, as well as the extensive resources available in the Digital Library.
> New FIAB for SBAC practice: Focused Interim Assessment Blocks accesses no more than three assessment targets than traditional IABs do to provide educators with a more detailed understanding of student learning. Traditional IABs could focus on up to eight assessment targets. Go to LROI>CAASPP Resources>More tab>Interim Assessments...peruse around! :-D
> SST information on students live in LROI. LROI>Applications>Student Study Team>search student (you may need to toggle to ‘18-’19 or ‘17-’18 school year to see previous SSTs). Paper directions are in the box with my counselor referral forms. So far we have had SIX SSTs.
> Counselor Referral Forms: teachers, staff, parents, and students may complete a form and place in my box. Once I am back on campus I will attend to the referral forms asap. :-) So far I have two Personal Growth Groups from your referrals.
> SBAC/CAA/CAST test window: April 20 - May 29. A specific schedule will be coming soon to a theater near you. ;-D
> Sanford Harmony: Please let me know if you would like me to do a few SH Lessons in your class. So far I have had SH lessons with Downey’s class, Celestial’s class and Sutton’s class.

> Thought for the week: Here are some fun ideas to open up each day of the week to create the mood for the day. You can implement Mindful Monday (SEL Topic of the week), Terrific Tuesday, Wish you Well Wednesdays, Wizard Word Wednesdays, Thoughtful Thursdays, Fun Fact Fridays or Funny Fridays (students can bring jokes) and finally Wacky Weekends (fun plan for the weekend). Perhaps students or tables (via table points) can earn the spot to be in the spotlight that morning. You can also use your Sanford Harmony Community Builder Cards to do quick opening day activities to SET THE MOOD for the day. :-)
> Staff Support: EASE (Employee Assistance Service for Education) is an amazing resource for family troubles, emotional distress, drug/alcohol problems, and job stress. CONFIDENTIAL # 800-882-1341. Free to all LBUSD employees. :-) We are human too! If we are not doing well, then our kiddos will feed on this. They are very vigilant and aware when adults are bothered by them. They may feel your stress, your sadness, but they also feel your warmth, your smile, and your positivity. <3
