Back To School Edition-August 3, 2018
Learn.Grow.Lead
First Day of School Is Thursday, August 16th!
Welcome Back Pirates!
We believe in creating an open avenue for communication between school and home. The Barry News is only one of these avenues. We also have a Facebook page, Twitter account, and school website that will be frequently updated throughout the school year. Please access these sites to keep in touch with all of the news and events taking place at Barry.
We have so much to look forward to this year! We will use this newsletter to share our building focus areas, goals, and progress throughout the year.
Barry School Hours: 7:40-2:50 Breakfast Begins at 7:25! Students may enter the building at 7:25.
Hall Pass
This year, we are implementing a new visitor sign-in process district-wide. Hall Pass Visitor Management System has been installed in all of our schools to improve overall building safety/security. The system will:
Conduct a screening on each visitor using the sex offender registry
Log in volunteers to track their hours
Be used to document late arriving students.
Because this will be a change to our current practices, we want parents to be informed before coming to Barry to visit, whether it is for lunch or for a variety of other reasons. Whenever any non-student or non-district employee requests to enter any area of the building where children are accessible (essentially anywhere beyond the front office) or requests to check-out a student, they will be asked to produce a government issued ID:
State driver’s license
State issued ID
Passport
US Military ID
Permanent resident card
The ID will be scanned and a badge will be given to visitors or the student check-out will be processed. This new process is a key to maintain and improve the safe and caring environment we have established for our students and staff. If you have any questions, please contact the school office at 816.436.9623.
Chromebook Update! (Grades 6-8)
Important Information About Student Chromebook Devices
As part of the District’s technology plan to increase the computer-to-student ratio, allowing more opportunities for students to work with digital devices, and expand their learning beyond the four walls of our schools, each 6-12 grader in Platte County School District will be issued a Chromebook laptop computer. For more information about the District’s One-to-One Learning Initiative, click here.
When will students receive their chromebooks: We are in the process of finalizing this plan. All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students will receive their chromebooks no later than Friday, August 24th.
Enrolling for Insurance: Complete at Registration Day
The enrollment fee for insurance is $30, which can be paid at your student’s back to school event. If families enroll in insurance and complete the necessary forms, students will be allowed to take the Chromebook home, and will have protection for accidental damage. For information on the insurance program, click here. For a guide on enrolling for insurance, click here.
Fees for Missing/Damaged Items: Complete at Registration Day
At the end of last school year, we collected student Chromebooks and checked the status of the Chromebook, bag, strap and charger. If any repair/replacement charges are outstanding, families will be asked to resolve these before students are issued their Chromebook.
Residency
Car Rider/Bus Rider Procedures
Please enter the parking lot using the west entrance at the front of the building. Make your way around the flag pole and drop students off along the side walk. Teachers will be on duty to help guide cars and students. A bike and walking lane have been added to the car rider lane. Please stay clear of the 7 foot area marked by a yellow line during arrival and dismissal. Do not drop students off at the front doors. Students will enter the school through the doors directly west of the main entry.
Bus Riders
Buses will drop students off at the doors on the east side of the building. Buses will use the east parking lot entrance at the front of the building. Please stay clear of the bus rider area during arrival and dismissal.
School Messenger
Newly enrolled families will automatically receive an opt-in message from 68453. If you missed it, simply text "Yes" to 67587 to receive these text messages.
Student Handbook/Planner/ID
Please check your child's planner on a regular basis. Student progress regarding Pirate Privileges is recorded every week in the student planner. Students are required to have their planner with them every day for every class. If a student loses their planner, the replacement cost is $5.
Students are required to have their student ID with them at all times. If a student loses their ID, the replacement cost is $5.

PTSA
The Barry Parent Teacher Student Association is very excited to announce that we have a brand new website through Membership Toolkit this year that allows everyone to stay up to date on all of the amazing things we have going on all year! This website allows you to sign up for automatic calendar reminders, JOIN PTSA online, order spirit wear, sign-up to volunteer, and so much more. Please take a moment to read the attached letter that explains how to access the website and other important information.
Did you happen to notice the beautiful, new entry sign when you passed by Barry recently? Our organization is so excited to present this gift to the school which will be instrumental in informing our community about upcoming events and other important issues. We are so thankful to everyone that participated in our fundraisers and contributed donations to make this purchase possible!
We are looking forward to meeting everyone at the Back to School Events at Barry. (6th Grade 2-6pm on 8/6, 7th Grade 2-6pm on 8/7, 8th Grade 2-6pm on 8/8 and 5th Grade 5-6pm on 8/14) Be sure to stop by the Cafeteria to say hello! We will have computers available to assist with registering for the new website along with volunteers to answer any questions about what the PTSA does and why it’s important for you to join and show your support. At Barry School, we include STUDENTS in our Membership so that they have the opportunity to make their voices heard and play an active role in the decision making process in their school.
Anyone that JOINS Barry PTSA by August 24th (only $7 per membership for the ENTIRE year!) will be entered into a drawing to win a gift card. (One for Staff, one for Parents, and one for Students.) PTSA Members will receive FREE popcorn and water at the back to school events. If you join PTSA from home prior to the events, please stop by our table to pick up your membership card and FREE popcorn/water! We'll also have samples of our new Spirit Wear available for you to see in person at these events.
We are excited to get this school year started with our new Membership Theme:
