Notes from the Nurse
Please remember the following while we are still in flu season:
There are still cases of flu, stomach bug and strep in the school. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is that your child remain at home for treatment and observation if they have any of these symptoms:
Fever (greater than 100 degrees). Your child should remain at home until they have been fever free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medicine such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen.
Vomiting - remain at home until 24 hours free of vomiting
Diarrhea - remain at home until 24 hours free of diarrhea
Chills
General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches
Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough

The Buzz from Ms. Blais
Dr. Kathryn Boger, Program Director of the Mclean Anxiety Mastery Program (MAMP), shared the following helpful information about challenging unhelpful anxious thoughts during her recent visit to the district.
Challenging Unhelpful Thoughts
You may notice that when your child is feeling anxious, she has thoughts that get in her/his way. For example, your child may worry that if she/he does poorly on her homework she/he will fail at everything, or that a family member might get hurt while she/he is at school. It is helpful to gently encourage your child to evaluate and challenge these thoughts. Some common questions include:
Is this thought helping you or getting in your way?
Is ________ definitely true/going to happen?
What would you say to a friend with the same worry?

Celebrate Women's History Month
It may be hard to imagine in 2011, but women were mostly absent from history books until the 1970s. In 1978, Sonoma County, California, began a "Women's History Week" designed to fill in those textbook blanks.
March became Women's History Month in 1981 when Congress approved a joint resolution by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Representative Barbara Mikulski (D-MD).
Today, few fields are left without prominent women leaders and trail blazers making headlines and paving the way for the next generation of aspiring young girls. Check out these Scholastic Kids Press Corps interviews for an idea of who will grace the pages of the next set of history books printed.
And don't forget to check back all month as Kid Reporters add new stories!
