Castle Rock Communiqué
Leveraging Online Resources for Learning - Week 4
Dear Castle Rock Families,
Our heartfelt thanks for the support and good wishes so many of you have shared with us over the past few weeks! As we head into spring break, we are looking forward to unplugging for a bit and spending some offline time with loved ones. We wish the same for you!
I am incredibly proud of the effort and preparation our staff has put into preparing for phase two of our distance learning initiative, set to begin on Monday, April 20. We are committed to making the rest of this school year fun and memorable for our Knights! Please see below for some tips that can assist your child with managing this transition and do not hesitate to reach out to us for support at any time. Additionally, we have received some inquiries about safety concerns with video conferencing; please see below for information about appropriate steps we have taken to secure this method of communication. Finally, you will find answers to "frequently asked questions" about phase two, and a message from our Castle Rock Community Club.
Happy spring break, Knights! See you online on the 20th!
Warmly,
Mrs. Alcazar and the Castle Rock Staff
Frequently Asked Questions About Distance Learning, Phase 2
1. Is participation in distance learning, phase two, mandatory?
Yes. Your child is required to participate and communicate with their teacher and submit requested assignments. Students who are struggling to meet expected requirements will be provided additional assistance to do so.
2. Will grades/report cards be given during distance learning, phase two?
Yes. Students will be awarded grades of either S (satisfactory) or * (not assessed) during distance learning phase two. This is standard practice across all elementary schools in Walnut Valley.
3. How many hours can I expect my child to be engaged with distance learning each day?
Castle Rock is following suggested guidelines that students participate for approximately two hours per day in distance learning. Teachers may provide additional resources, however, for students who work more quickly or desire more learning time.
4. When will I receive the device I requested from the district to support my child during distance learning?
All devices will be distributed this coming Tuesday, 4/14. If you requested a device from the district via the online form, you should have received an email with a specified pick up time. If you did not receive that email, please contact the district technology department at (909) 595-1261, x31200.
Tips for Success with Distance Learning
What About Video Chatting? Is It Safe?
Below is a graphic of the safety guidelines our teachers are implementing during video conferencing with Zoom (please note #1 does not apply to how we are using Zoom). Please do your part and help us keep our students safe by:
1. Never share links to our video chats publicly (on social media, etc). We only share our links through secure, password protected platforms like Google classroom or Class Dojo.
2. Do not allow your child to video chat from a private space like their bedroom.
3. Monitor your child's online activity to ensure they are not initiating video conferences without your knowledge or supervision.
If you have further concerns, let us know. Thank you!
